I'm having problems with DD's uniform, she's 3 and a half and starting school next week and she's sooooo skinny. I've bought some stuff with adjustable waists but they are really hard to find and I'm not sure that they are very comfy, I think they rub a bit.
Anyway, being really dozy with anything practical (and I hated needlework lessons at school with a passion - the teacher was a right cow!!!), can I ask how you go about adjusting waistbands sewing-wise. I've got a couple of trousers and skirts that need doing (with elasticated waists) and I've got as far as getting them out, having a look, and giving up!!!!
Why do shops only seem to cater for 3 year old billy bunters????

hi janepig,
if the elastic only goes half way round I take in the sides to fit - double fold slightly then sew the top. When I've taken in full elastic waists, I undo the seam of the band and take in the elastic, then the waist sort of gathers, but I dont tend to buy elastic waists because of how slim DD1 is. At her last check up, GP was concerned because she is underweight - 5'6" and less than 6 stone - but you would be amazed at how much she actually eats. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. I find it hard to get stuff that fits any of my 3 children round the waist. We have some adjustable stuff from m and s, but even the tightest setting can be too loose. For my daughter who is 4 I've just bought pinafores to avoid this issue. They are quite voluminous but at least they are guaranteed to stay on. Perhaps you could try this solution?0 -

I've been looking at them, but I can't seem to find them in this area in black, but when I do I think I'll get one, they're nice - can you put polo shirts underneath or do you have to put a blouse/shirt?
I've had similar problems with trousers and skirts, loads of navy and grey, not so many black.
She's also got a blue ginham dress for the warmer weather which I bought back in about April in anticipation and I'm glad I did because I haven't seen any age 3 dresses since!!!
I'm also looking forward to the colder weather because she can then wear a vest, polo shirt tucked in and a sweatshirt over, thereby giving her a bit more "girth" with which to hold the trousers/skirt up.

I know that my sons' school says that the uniform suppliers will source whatever's needed in any size at the 'normal' price. This is more than high street prices but I believe it is good quality. So, worth asking the school?
Of course this only works if they have an 'official' supplier: ours does mail order and comes into school to run a shop on a weekly basis.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I had this very problem with 9yr old DD yesterday. She's quite plump at the moment ready for a growth spurt, has size 6 feet and is a size 12. School uniform shop had a skirt to fit but at £37 it certainly cost!0

jellyhead wrote:my town doesn't have bhs or debenhams, so i'll look next time i see one elsewhere thanks savvy! he's fussy about the feel of the material and how it hangs, how it touches his other clothes etc. so i can't just buy online, have to try things on. when he grows up he says he'll be a chav because they get to wear clothes that feel like pyjamas all day :rotfl:
Apart from when he goes to work, he never wears anything but jog bottoms and t-shirts and sweatshirts.jellyhead wrote:jules i don't like ironing the cheap ones either, and he doesn't like buttoning them up.
But none of mine ever did up buttons on polo shirts - and thinking about it, I don't think any of them do up their top shirt button - and if you buy their shirts a bit on the big side, it doesn't matter if they take them off over their heads rather than unbuttoning them!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
cheap polo shirts need to have the collar ironed, you can't really not iron them. but it's the only bit of the shirt i iron, and i don't iron anything else. my husband's shirts don't need the collars ironing, probably because they are better quality, different material.
ciaran never does the top button no, but he would be told told off if he left all 3 buttons undone. never thought of buying too big, but then i suppose he'd struggle to get all of the material into his trousers when tucking in lol! he needs to get used to wearing a shirt this year, in case the tie in high school is compulsory. hope i can get one on elastic :rotfl:
i saw clothes that look like girls school uniform in asda yesterday, in the petite section, sized in women's sizes. might be good for older girls with curves (was it black saturn mentioned it?)52% tight0
