As Camskil is supply only, you then have the cost of carriage, plus fitting at a local tyre house, plus balancing at a local tyre house, so all in all there's probably not much in it.

Nope. I was comparing 'tyre only' prices. On the (random) size and tyre I checked, National was £16 per corner higher.

Out of interest, I also checked Blackcircles' tyre only prices and they were surprisingly competitive, too. Must be pullng their socks up!

Oh, and no, I don't work for Camskill. I'd never heard of them till I saw good reports on Honest John's site.
  • Following on from this - I had my tyres checked by ATS and they said I had 3mm left on my rear tyres and quoted me £90 for new ones (165/65TR14 Federal TL) They did advise I could swap my front and back around as front were 5mm - but I wouldn't feel confident about doing this myself.

I could shop around but was thinking I should get these changed asap as have a couple of long runs coming up. Any advice? (I've only been driving a year so have no clue about these things)

Jeezus!! £90 for a run of the mill budget tyre????

    Or was that for 2 tyre's? :o
A brief check online shows they're around £40 each........

Personally id rather pay more for something that grips better and lasts longer.
But then..... Im the type of driver who puts £75 of petrol in their car once a month, rather than £5 every day or so.

that was for two so not that bad - that was the cheapest. I've since phoned a local independent and their cheapest was £65 with their next one up at £80. They reckoned around 4,000 extra milage with the more expensive ones.

4000 is 6 months for most people.... BUT
Don't listen to "tyre people", they make more profit on cheap (non premium brand) tyre's, they get weekly deals on certain makes and will try to push those to the customer at the normal price.

I know that tyre's make a huge different and anyone that tells me cheap tyre's are just as good, will get told to go forth and multiply.

A cheap tyre company once sponsored a Porsche racing cup (old Porsche 944's etc) at club level, the condition was they had to use that companies sports/racing tyre's. It was like watching dancing on ice, lots of nasty crashes, those poor drivers couldn't keep the damn things on the road!
We used to joke that they were racing on remoulds, it was that bad.

How does that convert to the road? well.... What if you have to avoid an accident or brake really really hard?

Yeah there aren't that many around.

But joining fee is pretty reasonable, plus you might meet the cost just through the saving on the tyres.

I've always found tyre-shopper.co.uk to be very well priced. I just buy them online and then go down to my local National where they are fitted. There is also usually a 5% off code knocking about somewhere.

Michelin Pilot Primacy HP or the Michelin energy savers you already mentioned worth paying a bit more for if your keeping the car long enough as they last longer and seem to perform very well in tests which is unusual for a long lasting tyre.
I have Michelin Pilot Primacy HP on our two cars, they are below average in wet snowy conditions though... :(

You can get Bridgestones for that price at Blackcircles - £45 a tyre, or Kumho or Firestone fiited by Etyres for same price. They'll both switch the tyres round if you ask them. Although you'll have to wait a day or two for both - at ATS you can drive straight in. personally i'd wait for the premiums if you can.

If not see if ATS will match the price for the bridgestones?
