We owe the US a debt of thanks. As D-Day was not the picnic that films portray.
We owe nothing to them.
The UK proved itself by stopping Germany with battle of britain, we saved our own !!!! thank you very much.
America did nothing except out of sheer 'self'.
If america didnt enter, big deal, the worst would be russia dominated europe, except UK.
Royal navy pawned the US and german navies.
this 'thank america' crap is a joke on a super ignorant level.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

What's your biggest?
I think the most worrying thing about him is he is making the most widespread cuts in the history of the country, based on ideology and economic understandings I don't really agree with.
He might be right. I hope he is. I believe he is honestly doing what he thinks is right. I suspect, though, that it will be a disaster...
Anyway, with regard to the original post, I think that for an intelligent man Cameron doesn't always know when it is time to keep his mouth shut. He should have just paid tribute to the heroic men of the American armed forces... which is not a controversial thought.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

We did not hold out for years, only from 1939 to 1941 - after June 1941 we were no longer the main attention of Hitler. If Hitler had invaded the middle east instead of Russia in 1941 we would have been well and truly screwed, as it would have given the Germans control of the oil producing areas and broken the essential communications route within the British Empire and Commonwealth.
I thought the Germans and Italians were in the Middle east 1940-42 culminating in the battle of El Alamein in 1942.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. My OH's grandfather was in the Polish Army, and eventually (about 1943, I think) ended up in the British Army. He was demobbed in London in 1946, and became an NHS dentist.0 -

At El Alamein we strongly outnumbered the Axis forces 2:1 in manpower and tanks but still couldn't totally destroy them. They fought on bitterly in Tunisia until May 1943, by which time the Americans had entered the fray. Even invading Italy would have been very painful without American assistance. And that campaign was in the Western Desert, not the Middle East, which is east of Suez.0 -

Correct and if lost would have allowed the Axis possession of the Suez canal and entry to the middle east.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. Hitler was pretty keen on the whole idea - had whole plans and designs drawn up for it....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Just one other point on that, Russian oil fields were closer,Russia were already supplying Germany with oil under the pact and one reason (among others) for the Russian invasion was access to that oil.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is.
