i agree with cameron. in no way were we a major or equal power in the fall of the nazi's. we're just a token force in afganistan. little more than moral support.

Then you need to understand Dunkirk, the events before hand. As the BEF was tactically caught unawares. By a smaller less superior armoured fighting force.

It was the sheer number of English and French personnel that were ultimately saved. That probably influenced Hitler's invasion plans.
I fail to see what that has to do with us losing the war. If Hitler hadn't launched Barbarossa he would probably have had another million and a half men + to launch at us, not to mention one and a half thousand + aircraft. He made so many mistakes it's beyond compare.

If Hitler had been a better commander we would have lost the war. In fact later on, all plans to assassinate Hitler were put on hold and the reason was he was such a bad military man, it was better for us to leave him there, rather than take him out and risk putting someone sane in charge.

well yes many of us wouldn't even have been born most likely. it's something i often wonder about. and also people's attitudes. because the majority go along with the dominant ideology. so most would no doubt be celebrating the victory.

What strategic purpose was there to the invasion of the UK though?

Amongst other things Hitler needed oil to keep his military machine moving. The push for Moscow was a fundamenatal mistake I agree.

As Stalin had already thought ahead too and made his heavy manufacturing plants capable of switching to armanent production, and also made the factories and machines portable. So they where literally packed up and railroaded to Eastern Russia well beyond the reach of the Luftwaffe, and rebuilt.

The Russians also built the T34 which despite the fearsome reputation of the Tiger, easily outgunned it.

During WW2 the Americans created the concepts of prefabrication and welding which meant that merchant ships could be built in as little time as 6 months. Without this would the North Atlantic conveys managed to transport the UK's needs to maintain it's war effort.

If the Japanese had won at the battle of Medway. How would they have changed the course of history in the Far East.

So many factors conspire to change the course of history. Some very small but critical in effect.
