Well if your CS are lovely that narrows it down - sounds like there aren't many in the country that are!! ;) Don't say too much or the locusts will have you! :D

I suppose since I started looking for R&Rs I have found one (albeit small ones) in each shop. I only buy what I would normally, just look more carefully at the SELs and receipt. My maths fails me but that must mean the R&Rs reported here must be a huge proportion of them nationally? How many customers do Tescos have a week?

As I said before, a forum like this is always going to highlight the extreme. Gives a false impression of the scale of r & r's if you don't realise that...

Customers - not sure. Market share is what, 20%? Population of the UK, 60m? 20% of 60 million?

12 million customers? Total ballpark figure :o

  • OK I make that 1090 R&Rs per week nationally then at the 1:11000 rate - although that assumes no one goes more than once a week but I guess cancelled out by the fact that a shop often counts for more than one person. Anyone guess how many R&Rs are generated from this site - nevermind how many we hear about? We must have cornered the market with some of the pros (I won't name names but you know who you are!) making it to the whole percents... Not surprising they find serial R&Rers easy to spot then...
  • We find out exact date, only thing not completely clear is wether it will be morning or afternoon, but is not a prob as we make sure everything is shipshape, even down to sending members of staff to grab a new shirt from uniform if button is missing etc, would hate to be caught of guard, we would not want our store coming anywhere near the bottom of the league, and besides all the incentives and perks that are up for grabs, well need I say more!

Tell me something has your approach to r&r seekers softened or hardened as a result of this thread? Do you view such people as potential fellow members?

I do not believe my approach has changed. My knowledge on procedures has perhaps sharpened up a bit, but it was not too bad anyway. Perhaps I have been lucky, I can not recall dealing with someone who I felt was taking advantage of the policy.

No, I do not view such people as potential fellow members. From this threads point of view, I do not consider myself a member of mse really...its hard to articulate (which is why I took so long to reply  ), but I think my presence here is pretty unique. I enjoy coming here and I hope my input gives a (sometimes) much needed balance.

Hope that made some kind of sense.

What on earth is the point of your company paying for mystery shoppers to visit its stores if you are tipped off with the date? How does the information reflect reality if you put extra effort in to that day only?

Waste of time and of no use to your customers. Unless they all know the date as well and only shop on that day!

Don't give me that now, don't tell me your time on mse has not benefitted you in some remote way, I obviously appreciate the conflict of interests here on this thread but an mse'r you no doubt are.

You on that radiator fluid again - sounds like you're getting all sentimental! ;)
  • I worked in retail for years and can honestly say that in the 5 large companies that I have worked for we have ALWAYS received a tip off when we were getting mystery shopped/spot visits. The area managers always knew and were afraid to get their buts kicked so would call and say something on the lines of... 'just to let you know such and such may be in your area today'... 'such and such a store has just had a visit from HO be warned'... or a mail out with 'this quarters mystery shops are about to begin'. It makes a total mockery of it.

One day when I was manager I knew I was being 'shopped' at some point. NONE of my staff turned in (Sunday morning) and it was Christmas week a couple of years ago. I had to open up and the customers flooded in (mystery member part of them) and I 'failed' as I didnt help him to select a christmas gift and then wrap it...

I had no choice to open up alone and knew exactly who the shopper was but as I had a queue right around the store I had to leave him to serve the REAL customers. Black mark against my name but a total joke of a system!
