  • Keep going skintasusual you can do it.

Last night I really wanted one - my OH was smoking. I've also realised that I used to buy a lot of fizzy drink because I liked the taste of the sugar and the cigarette together - had a drink of fanta last night and couldnt have more than a glass as I found it too sweet!!

Have got the mother of all sore throats this morning. Don't know whether that is anythinig to do with giving up or not?

don't worry skintas - the first 48 hours are the worst. After that, you will be calmer than if you had been smoking. Take it in little steps and you'll be there before you know it

perdita - you'll probably get all sorts of things as your body sorts itself out. Don't worry about it. And by the way, it's 'stopping' not 'giving up' on this thread.;)

No one is giving anything up...... they're gaining loads

Hi Everyone, I hope you don't mind a non-smoker coming on here. My OH wants to give up next week and I am looking for things I can do to support him. Is this Alan Carr book any good? What is the best (cheapest!) place to buy it from?

Do any of you have any tips of anything else I can do to help him, as I know this is going to be really tough, particularly as the people he works with smoke.

Ok, I am also stopping smoking. There I have said it. I've wanted to join this thread for weeks!

I have lost count how many times I have stopped, only to start up again a few weeks later. I had my last cigarette on sunday night and I haven't missed it at all, but that's the problem I can stop very easily for a few days then I go round to a friends and it all falls apart.
I haven't read AC book, is it worth getting a copy now even though I'm on day three?

Well done to everyone who has managed to stay off them. :T

You will find a load of AC 'disciples' on this thread. Wouldn't know the cheapest place to get it.....

I personally would also recommend Neil Casey's 'The Nicotine Trick' as this is what worked for me. It's a fiver and provides a good technique for assisting with stopping.

One thing to help your OH is to take deep breaths before he lights up. Part of the initial 'hit' is in the first drag, which is taken deeper than the rest of the cigarette. If you breath deeply, then hold the breath and let it out slowly a couple of times, the first drag will not seem as 'nice' and will help to disassociate this 'nice' feeling from having a cigarette

Damn nicotine monster, i will NOT be beaten!!

AC book is excellent, have sent my OH to work with a copy today!
Mys sister gave me a copy, and I bought a copy for £8.99 (huge investment)

I don't think it matters if you have already stopped, the principles of the book still stand. I might read it again tomorrow!! It will be good support I think!

Thanks everyone for not kicking me out for failing! :p

Skintasusual. Well done for getting back on the wagon.
I will read some reviews on both the AC and Neil Casey's book.
I know I need some strategies for times when I am in a social setting and I can't think of anything else but lighting up. All my friends smoke and none of them are at all interested in stopping.

Its good to see all the possitive messages on this thread. If anyone does fall off just pick yourself up and stop again. I have stopped many times but one thing I learnt a couple of years ago was never stop giving up.

I stopped at the beginning of June then went on a cruise and when we got to Gibralter because Ciggs were so cheap, 60p a packet purchased 1400 to bring back for friends. Got them back to the ship and just opened a packet and smoked one (Very slowly). From then I had to smoke the rest until I had finished them.

I stopped again on 6 Sept nearly 1167 hours ago. :j

I have not used anything just gone cold turkey. For me I have found this to be best. I have eaten a lot more now and do I love bags of Malteasers!!!!

Just keep up all the good work everyone!!! :T :j :T

  • Merlin139. I love malteasers too.
I've always gone cold turkey when I have stopped before, but I don't stay stopped for long, well actually the longest was 12months. So it can't do any harm reading a book or two this time round.
I agree this is a great place for mutual support and understanding. :D
  • good luck suzysue

I have never seriously tried stopping before!! only been smoking about 5 years though (STUPID I KNOW!)
