I agree with the Glasses Direct Rep in that after having an eye test we should be given ALL the measurements taken, what right do optometrists have to withhold information from their patients!
I for one will be asking for the PD measurements next time I have my eyes tested...if it means going to more than one optician then fine, as I do not pay for my eye tests due to father having glaucoma!0 -
Glasses Direct reprsentative I have a question for you.
I am having an eye test tomorrow. What information do I need to get from my optician. Obviously I need to get what power I need but I have read about PD measurements. Will my optician give this to me. I already pay for contact lenses from them so hopefully they will give this to me.
I am thinking about purchasing designer glasses from your website so I really want to make sure the glasses come with the ideal lenses for my eyes. Is there an option to enter a PD measurement or do you always just choose an average?
So basically my question is please list the info I need from my optician so I can get the perfect lenses from your website.
Hi Charlie94
It would be ideal if you could ask your optician to give you your PD, some refuse, some will do it for a fee, others will simply give it to you.
You are asked to enter a PD when you enter your prescription, and we tell you what the average is (based on a survey of 4,000 people) which you can use if your optician has refused to give you yours. If your prescription is above a certain strength one of our opticians will call to confirm your PD and possibly ensure it has been properly measured. If your prescription is low, then the average should be fine.
If your optician refuses, and you want to be 100% sure, we can arrange to send us an old pair of glasses and we can measure the PD from those. We can send you a prepaid envelope for that. Your PD shouldn't change so an old/spare pair is fine.
Whatever you choose, if there's anything wrong you can send them back for a full refund within 14 days if you're not happy.“Official Company Representative

Well then I hope you won't mind when we can't afford to pay for a 10 thousand pound visual field analyser or 5 thousand pound pressure machine to check for glaucoma.

If a high street optician did any of this they would be shut down by the general optical council precisly because it is NOT ADEQUATE!0 -
Thanks for the information and updates to the glassesdirect rep. I haven't been able to get on to order but hopefully the stock will hold up okay. I wondered if you buy a more expensive pair of glasses (the designer range) do you still get a free pair of cheaper glasses too? Thanks.0

Yes, you can have any pair of GD Collection glasses up to the same value for free (includes basic lenses - if you want thinner lenses or tints you'd have to pay for them)“Official Company Representative

I understood that your complaint was with online sales of glasses. I think you made your case clearly in your original post. I think it's unfair to turn your frustrations to the members of this site.
Personally, I would prefer to pay the appropriate cost of an eye test and then be free to choose my glasses from wherever I like without being made to feel guilty about it. The objective of both the high street optician and the online optician is to make money - it's down to you both to review your business models to stay competitive. The objective of members of this site is save money where they can - you can't blame us for shopping around to get the best deal.MFiT - Take2 member #126: Mtge at start (12/12/09) £60,000, Target (12/12/12) £6,000. You are correct that nothing is for free but what I find really arrogant are businesses that think they can rip off their customers for years because there is nowhere else for them get what the business supplies and when someone starts competing and under cutting the business directors moan because people decide to buy the competitors products which are cheaper!
Time for you to get in the real world...people will go for the cheaper option especially in current times! May be you need to look at your own business model if you are what you say you are!0 -

It is not my intention to insult anyone and if I did I do apologise.
I simply want to try and inform people of why having a business attached to a primary health care provider throws up these issues. I do not blame the public at all for wanting to go for the best deal but do blame the online suppliers (who specifically don't provide the eye test for which they are making specs) and the regulatory body who has turned a blind eye.
I also firmly believe that taking average p.d's is unsafe and measuring p.d's is not part of the eyetest but part of the sales of spectacles.
You only need to look at last months news of ex. lib dem leader demanding opticians to give out p.d's and then doing a complete U-turn when explained what this would do to high street eye health care.
I have no problems with online suppliers if they provide the eye tests. Online suppliers who do not provide eye tests will always be cheaper and so must be regulated else we lose all high street opticians.0 -
