CMD, looking at this list objectively it seems obvious what you should do - do you know what I'm going to say?

The only good things you can find about where you are now is the weather (yes it's freezing in Scotland, but the difference can't be more than a couple of degrees really?) and Max's baby groups/your mummy friends. I think once you've researched groups for him (and I think they're pretty well publicised aren't they?) you'll easily make new friends there. You also mention having (normal) friends in Scotland - does that mean you only have 'mummy' friends in England? I think it's important to keep your own friends as well as having the mums of Max's friends.

I don't want to influence you in any way but you really seem to want to go for the move. How does your OH feel?

Yeah, I think the list really does favour Scotland on a lot of levels. I have mainly Mummy friends down here but I have taken on the role of the social butterfly of the group and have organised a cinema evening once a month and a Xmas meal out away from the babies. My social life is beginning to pick up. OH has no friends though, as he is working Mon-Fri, practising in the band (that he is giving up anyway) and then with me and Max at the weekend.

I have to agree with Tete

    To me theres no contest.

Friends can be made anywhere and scotland has some lovely areas too. Winters suck in england too, in scotland you can get away with wearing a ski-suit, The 3 days a week will be taken up doing your research, and after that you have time to take up a new hobby.

If I let a long haul move scare me I'd be a bachelor living in his dads flat with no job and weighing about 18 stone.

Its short term pain leading to long term benefit, but others may disagree with me on that.

    Thanks NIM!

I would love to have 5 days with Max and 2 days working. It would be prefect.

I'm not wary of moving its just that we seem to do a lot of it. Moved from Scotland to Sussex in 2007 and then Sussex to Berkshire in 2009, and now another potential move before finally settling in Ireland. Just seems a lot :)

Really hope you get the job by the way :)

Looking at your list CMD it looks as if you already know what you want to do, otherwise you'd have squeezed in a few more pros for England ;)

I agree with the others, Scotland sounds better for you, and there are ways around the cold - spend the rent saved on heating bills and a variety of coats! :D

You say you have friends there already, surely they won't mind Max tagging along if you meet up? If not, you say you have babysitters! And you'll make new mum friends when you join the groups and stuff.

Hope it all works out :) x

Exactly. You can't let not wanting to do the actual moving sway your decision in any way.

If you've managed to make friends in England you can do it again in Scotland, and at least there you both have a suport network of existing friends.

Thanks Zig! I can think of pros such as we are close to London, lots of airports etc but all that is cancelled out by the fact that we have no money to enjoy any of this. If we were in Scotland we would have much more money to enjoy things, while still repying the debt

Its true - I suppose I am just disappointed that we can't move back to Ireland just yet and a bit emabrassed that we are moving again. I feel like a bit of a laughing stock and that people are saying 'there they go again' - no-one says it, but I feel it.

I am ready to settle down now in one spot and can't get to it. It's frsutrating

I'm with the others, Scotland sounds like the right option for you right now. My parents moved house about 8 times (all over England and a couple of years in South Africa!) before actually settling in one place to raise their family, they don't regret moving around so much, they like the fact that they have friends all over the place!

You're in quite a lucky position that you've got Max, he's the perfect excuse to get out and make new friends and there's always common ground when you're talking about a baby (IYKWIM!). There will be plenty of baby clubs to join and you'll make friends easily I'm sure.

The fact that it's easier and cheaper to get back to Ireland is a massive pro too!
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!
