You're missing my point. I've not drawn the conclusion that poor = bad. I've drawn the conclusion that in my experience often it is bad parents that don't work through choice, and it those parents that don't want to make sacrifices that then allow their children to disrupt others. They are the scum.
I actually have to disagree with you on the subject of hard work. If you're talking physical hard work then I agree, but being mentally exhausted is just as bad. There's not really anything mentally taxing about being a miner, but with writing there is.
why dont you stop pontificating about things you know NOTHING about Fang?
you think that a miner doesnt get mentally exhausted? you know NOTHING about the job then!
you have also insulted my dad and my OH (who was a miner for 20 years) and thousands of other men.
lesson for you on how mentally taxing the job could be - along with the physical demands.
a miner had to keep his wits about him - working a coal seam isnt like a factory! miners have to be aware of the environment every second - their lives depend on it! they have to be aware of any shift in atmosphere, noise, smell, and sometimes just a sixth sense of danger.
my dad was a prop setter - that involved going into new seams and shoring them up - highly dangerous work - and sometimes the seams were little more than two and a half foot high and running with water. he could spend his whole 8 hour shift for the week without being able to stand up - and alert every moment for ANY sign the seam was about to collapse!
my Oh did many jobs but at one time drove the seam cutter - also highly dangerous as the vibrations could cause a roof collapse as there was no shoring up - that came later. he also was highly skilled and experienced to do that job. he was also a member of a highly skilled team called the mines rescue. which took on only the best - and these men were prepared to risk their lives to save others and although they had great training, they all dreaded actually being called on because they all KNEW how horrific mentally they would find the rescue mission.
believe me the men came home both physically and mentally shattered.
yet these men could write poetry sing beautifully and appreciated art and craft and the peace they could get from just walking the countryside or working in gardens and allotments.
my OH has just completed another 20 years working for a utility company and has progressed and been promoted and will tell you that the mental stress of working for the company is NOTHING compared to being underground.
Sorry OP - I just hijacked your thread but Fangs thoughtless comment has infuriated me!0 -

I always encouraged mine to take part and they have both always had a good time regardless
I am lucky in that I work very close to my children's school so can go in for short events during the school day so they don't miss out altogether.
I help with Beavers and we are all off to Marwell Zoo on Wednesday (have taken day off to help) and this is the first time I have been able to 'help' on a trip with the kids
I am looking forward to it!...unfortunately it is a similar story with the non payers for the Beavers trip (which is heavily subsidised by the Beavers fundraising which I am also involved) so they have only asked for £8 per child to include coach and entry fee.
Last night the same parent as usual was kicking off saying she had already paid and wasn't paying again for her son (she hasn't she did this last time).
Great Bear has paid for the lad out of his own pocket rather than see him not be able to go - it is very difficult0 -
How can four children be singled out together? Think about it...
As far as you know they just went to do something very constructive like learning their times tables in a classroom. Which obviously you'd support?
Learning their times tables at 3 and 4?! Must be very advanced for their age!0 -

I bow to your greater knowledge. I apologise if I have upset you. With all due respect, you know nothing of writing so don't comment on that if you insist I do the same on mining.0 -
BTW-I wish the OP would come back and tell us whether or not she raised the issue with the school and what the response was.0

May I respectfully suggest youget a receipt book and write on it giving the top copy to the parent 'Fred Smith £8 paid towards Beaver trip' and get both parties to sign, retaining the other in the book. Then in the event parent kicks off saying she's paid and hasn't and is claiming to ahve lost her recipt, the originals are still in the book to show. I say this as a parent of a cub who has had the issues reversed, cubs claiming I haven't paid when I had and it frustrated me no end that there was no written proof.
With all due respect I am sure as in your case mistakes are made but we do have a receipt book and a receipt is written and handed to the parent when they have paid for anything (they are then marked paid in the book) - there is not time to validate everything with signatures (the leaders and helpers all give up their own time and are unpaid)
It takes long enough to adminster all the paperwork/forms involved and collect them all back etc...
Besides in the case of this particular parent we don't see her in person she just drops her son off - he had to practically lie in wait to get to speak to her last night with the end result being a load of verbal...I doubt she would hang around long enough to sign anything!0 -
