I agree with this but I do think only the parent is financially responsible

Of course they are. But sometimes they are not for one reason or another and then the children suffer and when it comes to education I think this is wrong.

they can go without parents-but he doesn't want to be there as he will be one of the only ones without a parent-the school seems to expect the few parents that do work to come and skip work! Its always the same children that parents don't go and the look of disappointment in their faces is too much! Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but he has said that if we aren't going then he doesn't want to. I have spoke to my parents and they only ever got asked to go to parents evening, sports day and christmas play.

My own children have been in this situation many times - you don't say how old your DS is (assuming very young) but I have needed to work full time since my 2 were tiny so they are both used to me not coming along for things like this.
I always encouraged mine to take part and they have both always had a good time regardless

I am lucky in that I work very close to my children's school so can go in for short events during the school day so they don't miss out altogether.

I help with Beavers and we are all off to the Zoo on Wednesday (have taken day off to help) and this is the first time I have been able to 'help' on a trip with the kids :)

I am looking forward to it!...unfortunately it is a similar story with the non payers for the Beavers trip (which is heavily subsidised by the Beavers fundraising which I am also involved) so they have only asked for £8 per child to include coach and entry fee.
Last night the same parent as usual was kicking off saying she had already paid and wasn't paying again for her son (she hasn't she did this last time).
The leader has paid for the lad out of his own pocket rather than see him not be able to go - it is very difficult :(

What are these reasons? Why would a parent that has custody not be financially responsible for their child?

I'm not sure I understand under what circumstances they would have for not being responsible for their own children financially?
Do you mean because they can't afford to pay?

Sorry if I did not explain myself very well. I did not mean they were not responsible I meant that they do not pay for whatever reason.

If they truly cannot afford to then there is help available. All it takes is a call to the Head to discuss it. But most of the parents that 'can't pay' are actually in the camp that 'won't pay'.

I understand why he would do that.

My Oh used to be manager of a youth football team and he would do the same for some boys, some had crappy parents and others just were on the breadline.

Again, this is not the fault of the kids.

But it is the responsibility of the parents. Where does it end? Car at 17? Perhaps a deposit on a house at 28?

The whatever reason bit is what concerns me really :(

I agree that is not the fault of the kids but I do think that the parents are always financially responsible - if they do not fund their own children (generally speaking) then whose responsibility is it?!
