Samsung Galaxy S or HTC Desire

I do appreciate it gives slightly extended battery life, but generally if you're charging your phone every couple of days anyway, its not going to make a huge difference. I did play with the swype keyboard, it does take some getting use to, but again I wouldn't be sold on it just because it came preinstalled on the phone. You can install swype for most android handsets. A friend of mine has it installed on his Nexus One.
Super AMOLEDs main advantage is performance in light. But tbh thats not so relevant in this country, i havnt found my screen unusable so far in this country (completely different story in ibiza - couldnt tell if it was locked or unlocked at times)Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
In direct sunlight in london i found it really difficult to tell! The lack of a flash might be bad on the galaxy! Howver one fault on both phones is that bbc flash videos dont work very well0

I am supposed to be ordering my new mobile today my current one has given up the ghost. Got it narrowed down to these 2 but just can't decide.
I know the samsung doesn't have a flash for the camera but is there many more differences. I currently have a samsung and it has been the most unreliable phone I have ever had but the ones before where great.
Does anyone have either of these phones or can you help me decide.

Hi yep ive had both now on the galaxy s replacement for faulty desire! Galaxy has bigger screen, more storage 8gb or 16gb to 4gb, betther screen super amoled v amoled! The galaxy also has better wifi connection with wireless n included which is found on newer laptops giving it better connection and also it has swype which is brilliant and a better battery. The desire has a flash and better ui with htc sense! But the decisions yours! They both come with 2 year warrenties0

Aside from the lack of flash, technically, the Galaxy S is the better phone.
It has a bigger (though not higher resolution) , slightly better screen.
The processor the Samsung uses is similar to the Desire's but has more grunt for 3d gaming (not a big issue for many). Some reports say the Samsung has some lag issues, which may be firmware related.
It has more features and connectivity enabled out of the box, like DLNA. You'll need to download apps on the Desire for these (not such a big deal)
The Desire has the onboard memory capacity of a goldfish. You can use an SD card to boost this to 16Gb. The 32Gig cards are apparently quite slow.
However, in my subjective opinion,
The Samsung is a bit big, ugly to look at and feels quite plasticky. The Desire feels much more satisfying to hold and use.
Samsung isnt famous for supporting their smart phones very well after release.
Every Samsung phone I've ever had / used has had a horrible, ugly, and baffling user interface. As the Galaxy uses Android with a Samsung overlay presumably this cant get too bad. But even so...
I prefer the optical track ball and physical home buttons on the desire.
At the end of the day theyre both great phones and I havent heard of anyone being unhappy with either.0 -
I have had the Samsung galaxy s for over 2 Weeks now on Vodafone contract and I'm starting to notice the problems that everyone's experiencing with lag. Now I do realise that for those who have just bought this phone as their first smart phone, they will not notice the lag as much as some other smart phone users as the phone is probably going to be much faster than their previous one.
This problem has now been acknowledged by Samsung and they are frantically trying to remedy this by releasing new firmware updates in some of the community forums. I've flashed my phone with one of the latest updates (I9000XWJM1) and whilst I've noticed a slight improvement with performance, it still doesn't perform as well as the HTC Desire which my brother owns.
If you go along to -http://samsung-firmware.webs.com/samsungi9000.htm- you will now see that you can download the very latest firmware update with the newer version of Android (froyo 2.2) but from the feedback I've read so far it is very buggy and still doesn't remedy the lag problems with the phone.
I just want to add that even though this phone has lag issues when opening or closing apps it's still the best smart-phone I've used this year and I won't be sending it back for a replacement. I think that once Samsung release the official Froyo 2.2 update in September then this really will be a contender for smart-phone of the year until they release their 1.5ghz phones in December.
So all in all, a brilliant phone with the best screen (yes, even better than the iphone 4 in my opinion) as it not only looks great in any light but also does not eat all your battery life up due to the AMOLED technology used. If only Samsung could have ironed out the lag problem before release then I think I would have given this phone a 9.5 out of 10 - instead I'll give it an 8.5/10It's only rock 'n' roll, but I like it.0 -
Sorry for starting a new thread and thatnks for moving it.
Thank you all for the help, I still can't decide. It seems that once I make my decision someone else posts and changes my mind!!You learn to love to liveYou fight and you forgiveYou face the darkest nightJust live before you die0 -
Not sure if it's relevant but I do drop my phone on a regular basis!!
I currently have a Tocco which stands up to dropping quite well it's just a shame it's such an awful phone. You learn to love to liveYou fight and you forgiveYou face the darkest nightJust live before you die0 -

I just want to make one thing clear to you - this really is the better of the two phone when it comes to gaming, video and the potential of the hardware inside the phone. the lag issues I'm experiencing WILL be resolved once the Froyo 2.2 update is released. I have used both phones for same amount of time and the Samsung galaxy comes up trumps due to the brilliant screen, weight factor and GPU chip that helps to shift 4x times more polygons than that of the snapdragon processor the HTC uses. The HD video recording has to seen to be believed and it's better than my pocket HD recorder device. I think in time, once Samsung have unleashed the full potential of this phone, things will be looking good for Samsung on the smart-phone scene and I can see them overtaking HTC next year in terms of sales and technology. It's only rock 'n' roll, but I like it.0 -
