Or 16gb memory if you get the Galaxy from VF.

  • Hi,

I am looking at getting a new mobile phone and have been looking at both the above phones. Has anyone got either of these phones and if so would you recommend it?

    Thanks

Ok i had the htc desire 4 a week n sent it bak as it was faulty am gettin the galaxy s instead. The galaxy is better in direct sunlight has 8gb/16gb on bord memory dependin on network and bigger screen. Htc desire uses htc sense which is better than samsungs ui

I decided against the Galaxy S because I felt it was a little too big and it was trying too hard to look like an iPhone.

If you've owned both phones why are you asking the question? You've already made your choice right?

Personally...without owning either phone, but my bro has the Desire and I played with the Samsung Galaxy S in the shop. Aesthetically I would go with the Desire. Its built nicer, feels more robust, solid and compact for its size. Samsung feels a bit cheap and I didn't like their bog standard Tocco like design. It appears samsung had just been running all their touchscreen phones through the same template!

Desire also has the optical trackpad which is also handy for text navigation. I thought samsung might have implemented their optical mouse into this phone too, but it didn't appear to be the case, which was disappointing as it was quite useful on their Omnia handsets and would have come in useful. Using just the touchscreen to edit any piece of text can get frustrating as you poke and prod to get the cursor in the right place.

The samsungs screen did feel cumbersome to use due to its over sensitive screen. I was selecting items I didn't mean to just by lightly hovering over the screen. Gets really annoying after a while. The 4" screen shouldn't feel drastically different from the Desires 3.7", but strangely it looked and felt like a much bigger phone in the hand (Toshiba TG01 anyone?). Plus you don't gain any extra resolution from the bigger screen size which begs the question "Why bother?". My eyesight isn't the best, but I would much prefer high density pixels on a smaller screen to give a crisper images rather than a larger pixels to fit a larger screen.

There are probably good things going for the Samsung, but I sort of lost interest in it as it wasn't something I would want to own purely for its boring design and standard hardware by today's standards for a smartphone.

Lol no i was asking peoples opinion the samsung has a super amoled in comp to the normal amoled in the desire so is better in sunlight etc! Also the swype keyboard is really nice and quick! Howver i prefer the desires net browser

Sorry but the super amoled doesn't quite sell the device to me. As long as I can see the contents of the screen it doesn't bother me what technology is used. I do appreciate it gives slightly extended battery life, but generally if you're charging your phone every couple of days anyway, its not going to make a huge difference. I did play with the swype keyboard, it does take some getting use to, but again I wouldn't be sold on it just because it came preinstalled on the phone. You can install swype for most android handsets. A friend of mine has it installed on his Nexus One.
