Samsung Galaxy S or HTC Desire

Forget the Wave. The decision here is between the Desire and the Galaxy S - they have almost exactly the same specs and they ARE both Android.
It seems to me the Galaxy S is only on O2, Orange and Vodafone. The Desire is also on T-Mobile and 3.
I can't decide either. I might have to make the decision based on price and looks. There seem to be better deals around for the Desire, however all the best deals don't seem to be in stock (beepy dot co.uk). I also feel the Galaxy S is trying a bit too hard to look like an iPhone.
NB. The "Galaxy S" is not to be confused with any other Samsung phones with the name Galaxy.0 -

Galaxy S is on T-mobile "sometime in July"0 -
Sorry but some of you need some clarification.
Both the Galaxy S and the Desire are on Android 2.1 at the moment, and yes, the Wave is on Bada.
The Desire was out before the Galaxy and may be a little cheaper right now.
The reasons for getting the Galaxy S over the Desire are - Longer battery life, bigger screen, Screen type (brighter, deeper colours and blacks and more energy efficient (I think), swype built in (confirmed fastest possible way to type on any touchscreen phone once you get the hang of it) and the biggest perk for me is that the Samsung plays virtually all media (Divx, Xvid, MKV, etc). The Wave would play these media types as well, but I am talking about the differences between the 2 Android phones.
Good luck - I'm going for the Galaxy S myself in a few weeks when my contract is up.0 -
The Galaxy S's size is both a good a thing and a bad. The screen is the largest, easy to use and very, very clear. But it makes the phone a little on the large size. I tried one and found it just too big to carry around (purely a personal thing, maybe).
The Desire (I found) to be far more usable. Also on battery life, I've read posting on getting 2 to 3 days out of the HTC if you use an app killer to close some of HTC's auto running processes...0 -
Hi Jon01, I have not done what you have done (pocketted both the Galaxy S and the Desire to compare), but although the galaxy S has a bigger screen the dimensions on paper at least give a different story - The Glalaxy is marginally taller and wider (by a few mm's) but it is a good margin thinner than the Desire making it's overall volume taken in your pocket less than the volume taken by the Desire (volume - as in height x width x depth).
So although the Galaxy may be smaller overall, are you saying that it does not feel like it is when you actually compare the 2 in reality ?
It would be good for me to know this.
Thanks0 -

Could just be me ! I could be a little odd (the wife keeps say that, so it must be true)..
The Galaxy just 'seemed' too big.
Go into P4U or CPW and see what you think...0 -
see http://www.electricpig.co.uk/samsungsmartphone/galaxys and see all links on that page. see youtube videos comparing the desire and the galaxy s in direct sunlight etc and also video processing power. based on those videos the galaxy s looks more impressive, but on avforums there are enough posts about there being some lag on the galaxy, plus the back looks tacky plus buttons are on the cheap side from some reviews and doesnt look as responsive on some videos while looking better on others.
the desire is fine for me, as i have two of them but if i was buying now i would definitely have a look at the galaxy s and check how easy it is to carry in the pocket.
battery life on some days i can get 2 days out of the desire now but on using it more on other days it might last just a working day. when i bought the desire i had to charge it even at work but it has improved a lot with time. i have installed a task killer recently which i rarely use but think willl be uninstalling it as isnt improving battery life and i think making it buggy as gps / internet crashes sometimes now after installing the task killer (task panel) some task killers like advanced task killer are known to eat the battery.
the flash on the desire for the camera gives a bit of glare on teh photos, so not having the flash on the galaxy might not be that much of an issue. how ever i find the 'led desire light' an useful app that coverts the led into a flashlight. an useful to have on the phone when used with caution bearing in mind prolonged use of the LED can damage the phone. the app has got brightness settings.
swype can be installed on the desire as well.
but the super amoled screen, better graphics processing and front facing camera does make the galaxy s worth a look. i certainly would if i was buying now. but am still happy with the desires as they are more than enough for my needs presently.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
A friend of mine took some photos and posted on another forum to help someone else decide. Should give you a clear picture of the sizes. HD2, IPhone (3GS),Desire, Galaxy .

Hi all,
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the responses.
I think I'm swaying more towards the Desire but going to check them out in shops to see which I like the feel of best - and what seems more user friendly for me.
