Freezing Milk

Can you freeze soya milk please? I have a vegan stepson who visits on occasions and just uses enough for cereal, then the rest is thrown out.
Also how long will it keep, opened please? (He often returns a few days later!)
(I buy the long-life sweetened type as then it's a store cupboard item)
Sorry to hijack thread OP. Thanks for any advice. The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

EDIT: just realised what you mean. I could buy the four pints, separate into 1 pint containers to freeze and take out when needed - why did I not think of that before  I can be so dense sometimes
Of course you'd get to the point to use it lol.. you get it out when you are running low instead of buying more!!
My mother buys the bigger cartons and decants into 1 pint cartons and freezes them, when one starts running low she gets another one out!
And if you don't want to waste it, buy smaller quantities.. it may be cheaper per pint but it costs more in the first place!!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Eat more porridge!
As for soya milk, there's a *lot* of water in there so it'll expand & probably defrost needing shaking. Try it? It either works or it won't.0 -

Milkshake, milky coffee?
Pancakes / yorkshires use milk and can be frozen. You might want to put something between the pancakes so you can get them out one at a time.
Egg custard / creme caramel.
I found an icecream recipe that doesn't use cream or eggs. I've not tried it though but it would definately freeze! Could be worth a try. http://www.food.com/recipe/simple-vanilla-ice-milk-373964
Yogurt?
Add to mashed potatoes. Think I've made sliced potatoes cooked in milk before. This looks similar. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/allotment/2011/jan/28/cookery-blogpost
Add to a soup? Cream of something or a smoked fish one.
Or just freeze it.2024 Fashion on the Ration - 3.5/66.5 coupons remaining1 cardigan - 5 coupons13 prs ankle socks - 13 coupons5 prs leggings - 10 coupons4 prs dungarees - 24 coupons1 cord jacket - 11 couponstotal 63 coupons0 -
This has some good tips, and I hope not to ruin it by being a smart-!!!!... However...
If you use 2-3 pints as you say, why not buy 2 pints and cut back? (and perhaps make it clear to whoever else may be in the household that once the 2 pints are used that's it for the week?)
If it were me I'd approach it like cutting back on spending by a third and basically pay closer attention to the usage. That little bit less on cereal, one less brew per day, etc.
But feel free to tell me to shut up! :rotfl:0 -
...or make a simple cheese by warming the milk and adding some lemon juice.0

not if you throw half of it away!!!
You buy 4 pints, use 2 and throw 2 away that is 50p a pint used!
You buy a 2 pint .. you use it all it is 44.5p a pint and no waste!
I'd get 2 pints, use those and refill bottles from the 4 pint.. freeze 1 and get it out when running low.. best of both worlds!... but we use about 7 pints a dayLB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Tweak the settings on the fridge?
On Saturday I finished off a bottle of milk, which had a use by date of 20th June. It wasn't opened until around the 21st, but I was very surprised how well it kept considering there were only two of us having a smallish amount per day.0 -

It's only cheaper if you buy and use 2 pints and don't need a drop more, but OP has stated that they use 2-3 pints a weekYou buy 4 pints, use 2 and throw 2 away that is 50p a pint used!
Either way, you've spent £1You buy a 2 pint .. you use it all it is 44.5p a pint and no waste!
