We ran out of fresh milk this weekend - I always keep a couple of cartons of UHT in the garage for such emergencies but the moaning from the kids that has ensued I have decided to freeze fresh milk instead.

Luckily for me when I dropped into the Co-op after the school run they had just filled up their chilled whoopsies!! 3 x 2pinters of organic semi-skimmed milk purchased for 29p each,. That'll do for me. Thank you to everyone on this forum for giving me the info I needed.

  • Hi all

The shopping delivery man has left me with 3× 4 pints of milk. Ive been charged for one. The end date is Tuesday. I want to freeze at least one. Do I freeze it as it is or put it in containers
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

    as is.
it'll freeze fine in the plastic bottle that it comes in. It will look very yellow though, don't worry that's fine.
IMHO you get more 'contaminatin' (I.e. it goes off quicker when you thaw itout) if you try to split it out into other containers.
thaw in frdige though (24 hours) before you want to use it, and don't 'hurry it up' (thawing) in the microwave.

  • Two or three days. Defrost it the night before you are going to start using it.
  • If the bottles are full to the top then pour a little bit out, as the milk expands a little when freezing. I keep milk in the freezer all the time without problem. It's handy if we run low and saves a special trip to the supermarket just for that.

A bit of advice, please. My milk consumption varies dramatically - it's mainly consumed by visitors. I know that you can just buy milk and put it in the freezer, but with my moneysaving hat on, is it possible to buy one of the (cheaper) large containers, decant it into the smaller ones (wombled from friend) and then freeze it? Wasn't sure if breaking the seal would have an adverse effect..... Oh - and it would be full fat milk, if that makes any difference.

    Thanks all.

  • Hi, yes i do this. Make sure the containers your using a very clean, although with full fat milk the fat may sit on the top. Just give it a good shake before you use it and make sure its thoroughy defrosted.
