I do this all the time! I buy the biggest milk I can and then freeze two small containers full - means I only buy milk about once a fortnight.

I often freeze milk - I either buy it and divide it into various tubs (I freeze most stuff in those plastic takeaway tubs) straight away (which I'll then get out to defrost and use for the next few days) or I may freeze it after a day or two in smaller quantities (i.e. to defrost and use straight away)

One good tip I heard, which I keep meaning to do, is to freeze in icecube trays/bags so you can just grab as many cubes out to defrost as you need. I need to buy an icecube tray though!

I have been freezing milk for many years. I usually buy 2 l plastic bottles of semi skimmed and freeze in my very large chest freezer. Recently when after defrosting it is separating a bit like curds and wey. This has previously only happened when I bought the 1% stuff. Has anyone else experienced this and any idea what is causing it?

  • Can you do it? Will it still taste the same? We get slaughter-free dairy products delivered and have to pay for delivery each week, so I thought it may be more economical to get them once per fortnight. This would only be possible if we could make the milk keep that long.

it takes a while to defrost and needs a regular shake as it is defrosting and I defrost with it standing in a mixing bowl as sometimes the bottles split.. but it is fine.

We get our milk (semi skimmed) once a fortnight from Mr T's, and shove it straight in the freezer. As Pigpen notes above, it needs a good shake once it has defrosted, but we've not had any other issues. We buy 4pt bottles.
Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

We live in the country, no milkman nowadays and nearest shop is 10 miles away so we buy and freeze 4pt plastic bottles of full fat milk every week. It takes them a good 12 hours to defrost but the milk is as good as the day it was frozen :). You have to freeze milk in a plastic container as tradional glass bottles shatter in the freezer, but its quite easy to decant milk into freezer bags if you want to split the quantity.

One good tip I read was to freeze it in icecube bags/trays. That way you can remove as many cubes as you need, e.g. just a few for a cup of tea, plus it should defrost a bit more quickly.

Hello to another Farmaround customer! My daughter, for whom I buy their milk says it tastes different when frozen. Another family member is quite happy to have defrosted FA milk.

Remember that it expands when frozen so unless you remove a few teaspoons before freezing you get a distorted bottle when defrosting.
