Hi Esther, I'm sure Taplady will be along with definitive answer but I would guess that granulated sugar would be fine, although might not taste as "toffee-ish" as brown sugar. Baking powder is not the same as Bicarb though. It has cream of tartar(?) in it as well. HTH.
Thanks Seasalt, that's kind of what I thought, but wanted to check. I made scones or something recently and used bicarb because I only had plain flour and there was a funny taste. What is it used for then - apart from cleaning which is why I have loads of it! Also putting in twinks hobnobs. I always thought it was the same thing until the scone episode. Not that anyone said anything.Second purse £101/100

Taplady: Thanks for your reply. My question at the time was to anyone who could help and then tonight when I saw you were on and no one had replied, that's why I asked you again. I will have a go at making them when the hobnobs have gone. We're supposed to be on diets but.... at least I wont make them before the hobnobs go and I do ration them out a bit.
Any idea how long they would keep in a tin? And the hobnobs too? Would like to make extra quantities if possible and keep but no freezer room.Second purse £101/100

Flowertotmum, I am sitting here cursing and spitting on your behalf. As others have said, if the cake was returned due to some food regulations/food hygiene issue, someone could at least have had the decency to bring it back in person and explain kindly the reason for rejecting it. Don't suppose for one minute they enquired after the health of your little girl? Nah, didn't think so! You could write a letter to the group secretary officially resigning/withdrawing your child from the group and explaining how callous and nasty their actions were. Explain to them just what kind of lousy example they are setting for the children in their care, and that you are sufficiently concerned to consider reporting the group to the local authorities as you believe their standard of care is inadequate. Explain to them that if it were your decision to reject the cake, you would have had the guts and the courtesy to return it in person and explain things in a civilised manner without causing hurt and offence.
Alternatively just don't turn up any more, cut off all contact with these people and make sure that whenever the subject of playgroups comes up in conversation you spill the beans on this group. In time others will get the message.
There are more worthy people in this world to call friends, and plenty more playgroups run by people who know the value of common courtesy. One life - your life - live it!0 -

Sorry i never swear but they have made me so angry...it might sound petty but i have never felt this way before..i'm caught between anger and hurt..my husband is fuming and my son wanted to go say something..but i won't let him...well its their loss..fluff them all...i'll stick to you lot ...you have all made me feel welcome and not judgemental at all...
thank you for letting me get it out..
Goodness me! Total lack of breeding. Ladies decline with courtesy.
Trailer park manners obviously.
It may be they don't 'do' homemade because it would put pressure on them to bake and you know how competetive that can end up!

omg!!!! you lot crack me up!!!!! loving the pimples on satan's botty comment hellsbells!!!!!! pmsl when i read that!!!!!
flowertotmum: homemade is nearly always better and also shows that you put time and effort into it rather than just picking up a shop-bought one when doing the grocery shopping!!!! they are probably just jealous as they are unable to produce such fantastic fare themselves!!! they are just a bunch of cee you next tuesdays and that is being polite!!!! they obviously are NOT your friends so i suggest you find some much nicer, more like-minded people to become friendly with and have coffee and cake with!!!! ps: any cakey going cos i'll come all the way from southampton to eat it cos i'm a cakey coinesseur........i love cake!!!!! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Flowertotmum - I agree with everyone, how nasty and petty can you get! (That is, presuming it isn't some health and safety thing). If it were me I'd turn up the next time and ask - and if it wasn't health & safety, I'd show them the note and ask whose piece of spite it was & give them a few home truths before walking off. After all, if you aren't going to have anything to do with them you've got nothing to lose! I'd also be tempted to do what Nargleblast suggested and complain to whoever runs the group! Mind you, I'm the mouse who always offers to bell the cat, so I realise not everyone wants to do that kind of thing!
Regardless, you deserve better people in your life. You have my sympathies as I am trying to get DS out and about to meet other kids and trying to meet other mums & I feel I have nothing in common with any of the mums I meet other than the fact that we are mums!0 -

*Sigh* DH was out with friends tonight. DS went down at 11:45pm and DH came back half an hour later. DS, no doubt excited by the sound of daddy's voice, woke up and is still full of the joys of spring & won't bloomin' go back to sleep! As I didn't sleep well last night either (not his fault, I was stressing about an online order that hasn't arrived), I could have done without this! Currently leaving him in his cot unless he cries - am hoping he might settle but, as he just laughed, I think that is looking unlikely!0
