    :j:j:j:j:jDS has got a job at last:j:j:j:j:j

After having been made redundant 3 times in 18 months (works in retail) up to Xmas last year, the job center insisted he quit his college course (retraining in animal management) which he had done for 18 months, so only 1 term away (16 hours per week) from finishing, so he could go on their new deal job search course, which he did and didn't find a job.
Has had 8 interviews over the last 2 months and been told he's come in 2nd place etc and getting very depressed about the whole thing too.
So yesterday whilst GF was having an interview for college, I printed him out some covering letters and CV's stuffed them into envelopes and told him we would go round the shops in case notices in windows for vacancies.
He dressed smart casual and did a few, then I spotted one that said 4 hours on Sundays, no use to my DS who has his own flat to run but I thought they might have something else, so I stood in front of the note and told him to try in side as I seen an add on a web site (little white lie:whistle:)
He handed in CV and the woman opened it there and then, read it and said wait there, back 2 mins later and said the manager will see you now :D
It was interview day for a full time role that DS had done before:)
Said he would hear on Monday, but just called didn't want to risk him getting offered something somewhere else and when could he start:T
It is minimum wage, which he has never worked for, and doesn't finish till 9.30pm so takes up the day and evening but he doesn't care, its a lot more money than JSA.
He has asked if I could still make some 'meals on wheels' for him :D

Well done to your son Taplady, you must be really proud and pleased for him.
It's finally hit home that I'm unemployed as today I've received my last pay cheque. I would have been on holiday anyway with working in a school but now I'm thinking in 2 weeks daughter is back at school 8hours a day and husband at work 10 hours a day so some long days on my own. There are just no jobs about to apply for, shops not hiring and with schools budgets being slashed I'm not holding out any hope for doing teaching assistant work again. Have been feeling quite keen to save money and cook from scratch but now I suddenly feel quite low as I've never been in this position before in the 24 years since I left school, always worked apart from when on maternity leave. Am going out tonight with two old work colleagues from a previous job I did before the last one and we are going for a cheapie all you can eat chinese buffet style meal so that will be nice and is something to look forward to.

I'm sorry about your job, I really hope you do manage to find something but it's so tough at the moment, my mum's in a similar position after being made redundant from a job she's been doing for the last 23 years recently. Such difficult times.

  • Really sorry to hear about your job Joannesaphine. Have yourself a big old cyber hug.

Had some dreadful news this morning about my job which has made me seriously doubt whether I have a future here or not. Trying to be positive and hopefully will be able to sit it out; but this is damned scary. Am trying to get alternative plans in motion just in case. I have a business idea that I want to work on to see if it would fly and I also want to see about setting up an Etsy/Ebay shop as well to see if I can make a little extra. Plus, I really need to get a wiggle on and get my Professional Qualification. I just have one stage to do, but it is such a grind to do it. Need to get the motivation and nail it once and for all.

So, I have lots of work and research in my near future then! :) First plan is to look at serviced offices. My business idea requires me to have somewhere I could use as a meeting space and somewhere to have business meetings. I need to see how much they might cost me and then attempt to construct a cashflow forecast to see if I could afford it, as well as the set up costs, and pay myself a living wage at the same time. Yikes. Hmmmm, might need a call to the local business link! :)

Hugs to everyone who needs them. I have my fingers crossed that Dad is going to keep getting better and hopefully get out of hospital very soon. I am currently waiting on a telephone call from my Mum to see how her conference with the medical team has gone this morning. I am praying that it has gone well and they will let Dad self-medicate as well as go home with a special IV system that Mum can use. We shall see though.

()s joanne and crickett and anyone else who needs one too.

Sorry you're feeling down joanne. I really hope you do find another job soon but certainly not easy at the moment and looking for a job can feel like a full time occupation itself! Meanwhile though is there anything you've always wanted to do but never had time before, I don't know, something crafty or gardening maybe? I do realise it's not got to cost a lot though.

I have to confess I know zilch about internet auction sites but I saw something I had never heard of, on t'telly t'other day. There was a young lady who had a shop [oops! sounds like the start of a bad poem but stick with me :D ] & people took the items they wanted to sell
; she did all the hard work--photo, description, etc--to list them on the-bay & took 30% think twas
As for premises--& bearing in mind I don't know what you are trying to do--but would things like a well-appointed scout hall etc
serve a purpose in getting you started? If 'clients' question your venue, you could blag it & proclaim support of local community which still wouldn't be lying :D

Cricket1234 I think that TravelLodge have meeting rooms that are available to hire if that would fit in with your business idea, they are often located near motorwyas and main roads making them very accesible. Just a thought.

Hope your Dad continues to improve.
  • Great ideas! And I am so pleased I mentioned it here...because having had a look at serviced offices, I nearly fainted at the cost of them! :) Will look into both ideas. Thanks! :)

I feel so much better actually doing something! During my lunch break, I am going to investigate Etsy and see if I can make something I could sell on there. :) My mum is setting up a store on Etsy selling childrens toys that she makes by hand (occupational therapy for arthritis!) :) Like Mother, like Daughter! :)

He will still take them again this year but his school is entering some pupils early for some reason..maybe to ensure they definately get a pass?

crickett - you could also look into such places as gyms for meeting facilities. Our local David LLoyd have meeting rooms and catering facilities.

We had one of those near to us, I sold a dress through her. Unfortunately she had to close, I dont think she was in the right position, you literally had to go out of your way to visit. Also towards the end it started to be more like a charity shop, nothing wrong with that but she started out doing nice dresses outfits (ball gowns/ weddings etc)
