Sneaks on hoping no one will really notice. Well i am not a complete novice to running- i did a lot of it a long, long time ago- had a knee injury (Pania will sympathise) piled weight on and ...well the rest is history.
Anyways- Goals- Well i have signed up to do the West highland Way with Elantan next year.:D
Coughs and shuffles feet- i have also put my name on the waiting list for the marathon next year:eek: Inspired my so many who were doing it at the time- i thought i would. I don't know if i could, but i will give it a good try- and need to get motivated to sort it all out. I am starting a schedule this summer- for upping fitness levels/losing weight- so it is all in the right direction. I don't even know if i will get allocated a space- knowing my luck i will:cool: But either way it will be ok as i am determined to get fitter and as they say i am doing it for myself:D

**hoiks Bob back before she has time to sneak off too far**
Well, went for my run - in the same howling gale that Pania was talking about, except we managed 4 miles.....today was 3 mins run, 2 mins walk, and 4 miles took 50 mins so I am very pleased with run chum as 3 or 4 weeks ago she could do nothing at all.
For me it is a nice easy run, but it is all milage underfoot so well worth doing, and helping my overall fitness.
Goals:
To get round the Ipswich half marathon at the end of August without shaming myself
To run another marathon (either London or Edinburgh) in April/May 2011 and to FINALLY get under 5 hours :rotfl:
So far, my three marathons over a 20 year period have been 5 hrs 16, 5 hrs 18 and 5 hrs 13 - I'm nothing if not consistent!!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
evening everyone, how are we settling in to the new club house??
 s frantically at bob!!!! stick around lovely lady its good to have you!!
well due to it blowing an absolute hoolie outside i plumped for the treadmill at the gym in the end. I have 10 days left on my membership after i gave a months notice and thought i'd make the most of it!!
so, 40 mins on the treadmill. a nice steady 8.6 kph for the first 30 then ran the last ten at 10kph whch got the blood pumping through the veins quite nicely!!
one thing i have noticed, have no idea where it has come from and it can stay as long is it likes is my self motivation to running, usually i will just stop if it is getting hard or in the event of treadmill useage will whack that big red button that says "stop" on it!!!but just lately i have found a number of ways to trick myself into keeping going. Like today, counting down the seconds til i could slow down and keep adding 10 seconds, ie.. 15,14,23,22,21,20,19,18,27 and it really worked!!!
further, i used to be adamant i couldn;t run without music!!! ipod battery flat? no exercise, couldnt do it. my ipod was 'alf inched by some little turds (pardon) when my car was broken into. the thought of running without filled me with dread. but i tried it... today i had earphones in at the gym and the music was such a distraction!!!
anyway enough about me, lets answer some of these questions, not that i am an expert by any means!!! sparkle, re the trainers... i would get your gait properly analysed at a shop. DO NOT buy the trainers they recommend!!! see what they come up with and then shop around to get them as cheap as possible.. I have on several occaisons made very costly mistakes by buying trainers that felt fine in the shop with absolutely no guidance, gone for my first run and ended up in a lot of discomfort and a lot lighter in pocket. i'm sure you will find many people the same. each asics trainer is made for a different pronation and gait so the ones you are looking at may not be suitable and may put pressure on your ankles, knees or hips and cause you injury over time.
I now have my trusty nike air pegasus and am on my 4th pair!! rp £75 normally in tkmaxx or sport soccer for £15-25 and they suit me to the ground!!! hope that helps.debt @05/11/11 £12210.63!! slowly chipping away!!:heart2:impossible is nothing.:heart2:0 -
Right! And herein lies my problem..... I don't enjoy it
its a necessity for me (keep the pounds off). I DO get a sense of achievement when I get a pb, or the other week when I did my first 10k, but its not fun.
Where am I going wrong?
hi hon.
ok. think you need to look at the reasons why you arent enjoying it and what you can do to start to enjoy it? is your running route too boring with nothing to loose yourself in on the way around? are you pushing yourself too hard or fast so that you come home constantly feeling drained? do you run alone if so could you do with a runchum? or vice versa!!! put your finger on "why" and i think you'll find out how you can enjoy it.
for some people (me) cross training works wonders. I have my bike now too (cycle to work scheme is an absolute godsend!) and sometimes i take that out for a good old blast as constantly running would drive me batts!! maybe mixing another activity or two or even looking at joining a triathalon club would help? some good goals there! :T stick with it .. where abouts are you?debt @05/11/11 £12210.63!! slowly chipping away!!:heart2:impossible is nothing.:heart2:0 -

Hi p and thanks for the response.
running route too boring? not that. I have one of the finest urban vistas in the country to look at when I am doing my lunchtime run
I run alone and prefer the solitude and thinking time tbh.... some have attempted conversation with me at parkruns, but the thought of talking and running at the same time is alien to me. Hard to get out a sentence when you're gasping for breath
pushing myself too hard? aha! I DO push myself (hard to believe, considering my times :rotfl:), but I feel I need to, to improve (long story)
triathalon club?    the very thought......
oh I will stick with itI don't have a choice. am in London

I recently got hold of book called Slow Burn by Stu Mittleman, he is great advocate for training slower and I found the book really inspiring. Worth a read"Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end."

Sounds like my kind of book!:rotfl:
Waves back to Pania:j < see i am excercising:rotfl::rotfl: Well i will do after passing over end of term choccies to skinny offspring. I had three and they have given me a thumping headache- at least i won't be tempted again:cool:
I will be getting my gait sorted as they say as i am a bit prone to pronation and i need to protect my knee- so am being ultra careful. The doc says i am good to go and he is a keen runner himself so was only too pleased to give me a bit of advice and not laugh in my face.:D:rotfl:
I am fortunate as the scenery is quite nice round here- so can chose my routes a with care and pick my places to wheeze in. lol:rotfl:Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

Just back from Day 3 on Week 3 run.
Went well, pace is steady to say the least and I am happy with that as the main aim for me is to complete the run programme
Stepping up to Week 4 next, looks like it steps up a level from there on.
Putting the new trainers on hold until I get to 5k and when I get there that's my treat to myself and maybe a new running coat thing if I can find a cheap enough one ready for the autumn!final unsecured debt to repay currently £8333Proud to be Dealing With my DebtDFW Nerd 1154 Long Haul 1550 -

I haven't seen this book, but I wonder if I am doing something similar - when I have episodes of running before, I have just gone out there and run, my pace never seemed to really change and I would always knock out 10 or 11 min miles until the cows come home......never making any difference whether I was training or racing, 3 miles or 20 miles.....
Recently, I have started helping a friend out with her running and she is doing run/walk but for reasonable lengths of time, eg in the last three weeks we have gone from 40 mins up to 2 hours of 3 or 4 min runs followed by 1 or 2 min walk at a pace of probably 12-13 min miles for the running bits. I find it quite easy and enjoyable and have been seeing it as "time on my feet" but as I am not training for anything really at the moment, that is more than good enough for me.
Today, runchum called off because she has hurt her back and can't get physio until Monday, so I went out on my own for the 40 mins that we had planned to do together, but obviously I just did my own thing rather than her run/walk stuff.
And I did 4 miles in just under 37 mins, which is a tad over 9 mins a mile, which is much faster than I would have done before and given that the weather conditions out there are blustery to say the least, I am incredibly happy to have gone that fast!
That would mean, if I could keep up the pace for another couple of miles, that I could possibly get under the hour for a 10k in due course, which is something I have not managed to do for 20 years! There is hope for me yet!
So, I reckon the slower training is paying off and slower time on my feet for longer periods is just as good for me as a "ploddy" 4 or 5 miles!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground.
