  • Yes, well, not been running at all recently.....don't know where sparkles is? I really need to get back into it but it is probably not going to happen until August - I'm really busy until then but I keep trying to convince myself to get out there......

I'm here - not running as have a huge assignment due in shortly. Hoping normal service is resumed next week when its in and that's it for a couple of months.

Still doing the stepper with weights and also started 6 week 6 pack this week to keep some exercise going on and rest my extremely tight leg again and stretch it out

    Hi all!

It has been a while, what with me realising that due to hurty knees I wasn't cut out to be a runner and all...

...anyway, I hope you are all well. You all seem to be zipping around quite happily at any rate...

I need some help, please. I managed to have got myself into a bit of a, erm, pickle :o and you lot are just the people I need to offer some advice.

So you know how I've always wanted to run a marathon, right? And how I thought it would be nice to do so in honour of my dad who died of cancer, right? And how I started going running and one of my knees was not agreeable to the idea, right? And that I kind of gave up on the idea after that?

Well, I realised that it's not the most positive thing to do in life, and I heard about the Moonwalk in London, which is walking a marathon for breat cancer overnight. I thought it was a great idea, and wondered that if I couldn't run a marathon, that maybe I could walk one, like the Moonwalk, instead. Well blow me down, but no sooner had the thought formed in my head than they announced the Shine walk in Manchester, on the first Satuday in September, which is basically like the Moonwalk, but you can choose which type of cancer you wish to support and it's on my doorstep. I literally couldn't say no...

Well now it's 12 weeks before the big day and due to everything possible doing or going everything bar which way it should in life, I haven't started training. I have been doing a stupid amount of working/studying, which is about to reduce to a sensible level this week, so I could realistically start training, but I'm just afraid that I might have left it too late, or that I would have to modify the training schedule a bit as the official training program they propose (http://shine.cancerresearchuk.org/media/files/17379%20Shine_Marathon%20Training%20Plan%20WEB.pdf) might be a bit much for a few weeks in terms of the longer walks if I jump into their training schedule at this stage.

Essentially, am I too late? Do you think it's still achievable, if I start now. If it were running, I would say no chance, but walking is a little different, although I don't think it's sensible to underestimate 26.2 miles, whichever way you are planning to travel it. What changes would you recommed to the training schedule, if any, in the first instance at least, if you were training? And how do I get myself into these messes?!

Thanks for your help, guys! :D

    Hi Pickle!

Yes,you can do it! So just get out there and train!

What is you fitness base atm? I am no expert and am just myself training for a target for the first time (half marathon). Maybe start with the plans first week training and see how it goes, will you be ready to step it up or is it about right for you level now? Do try to keep it up and consistent because, as you say, even walking, 26.2mi is still 26.2mi! Is there a time limit that you have to complete it by?

3mile steady run for me this lunch time.

    Thanks tirlittan! :T

My fitness base isn't great, TBH, but I guess it's probably not quite as bad as I think (in my head I'm one step up from a corpse! :rotfl:) and I wouldn't mind but all the study I've been doing that has got in the way of training has all been sports-related! :wall: :rotfl:

Right, will be back to harass you at a soon-to-be-confirmed date once I've got my head into 'plan training' mode. :)

Sooo tired after work today and a run planned. Had to lie down when I got back home but not really the best idea. Fell asleep but forced myself to get up after half an hour as otherwise I would have been there till the morning.

Anyway, got up,put my gear on and off I went. Wasn't sure if I'd actually manage to do the whole 4 mile planned route but at least I was giving it a go. So please to report that I managed the whole 4.2 miles and run all the way, including the uphills. I am so proud of myself!

2.6miles after body pump yesterday. Hard work but got a bit easier after the first mile. Now only 'long' run of around 6mi to do this week. not sure where I manage to fit that as off to collect our new MTBs.

    pickle,how are you getting on?

Not much running for me as I'm concentrating on toning up for the next month or so and have been doing 30 Day Shred and 6 week 6 pack. Very enjoyable too and quite nice to have a little break from running. Will go for a run per week while doing this
