Hi all,
I’m no marathon runner (I’m barely a runner if I’m honest) but I hope you’ll let me be an honorary member in the club!I apologise for the massive post, but I’m looking for advice on injuries I’ve sustained.
Since March 2010, I’ve been exercising quite a lot (apparently sitting on the sofa playing xbox doesn’t count) as I stupidly signed myself up to a number of challenges. I cycled from London to Paris in September 2010, and I vowed that I would not do any training for 2 weeks after. About a week after, I had unbelievable pain in my knees on the inside (i.e. inner leg) and it was stabbing pain every time I walked and it was difficult to do anything.
I went to the physiotherapist and he did an assessment and said he didn’t think it was anything torn or damaged, it was just that my knees and that piece of muscle there was constantly hammered for 4 days, and then I did nothing so it was deteriorating. After a few days of doing some strengthening exercises and putting ice on it, the pain went away.
I did a 10K in April of this year and I didn’t really suffer afterwards. It was my first ever run at this distance, and I did the distance run/walk, so I think that helped my poor knees. Straight after thing (runners high and all that) I signed up for a half marathon in September, but I didn’t start training for that (rightly or wrongly) till after the next stupid thing I signed up.
I did the 3 Peaks in May and afterwards I couldn’t walk properly for a week! It was the same pain in my knee. Sometimes when I walked, I’d feel my knee give way or it would lock. I used a lot of deep heat and stretched my legs out to help, but it took a week to fully recover. My quads were aching so getting up and sitting down was difficult (I’m only 27!)
In June, I started training for my half (14 weeks) during this time I went to ‘boot camp’ for about 3 weeks, did a cycle tour round Norfolk (250 miles) and was ill for a week! I did my half, plodded the whole way round (which I was proud of as the most I had ‘ran’ in any one time was 8 miles) but again, after this I had the same knee aches and quad pain which again lasted a week.
I started running again last week, but this week I went to 4 miles and my knees and legs have that same pain again. It’s getting better, but I really want to go for a run tomorrow.
So my question (after all that ramble), do you think what the physiotherapist said was right? Should I go back? Is it because I haven’t been stretching/cooling down proper?
Any advice would be greatly appreciatedDEBT FREE SINCE 25.07.14!

Hi GreenSaints and welcome! If you run, even a little you can be a 'full member', no need to be an honorary one.
I'm no expert but I think after a long time doing not a lot, you've just been doing too much and your body, especially your knees, are just not coping with the amount of exercise you're putting them through. It's important to gently build your body up to exercise and load it bit by bit, otherwise you will get injured.
Anyhoo, that's my two pennies worth.
I was supposed to go for a run yesterday, but to be honest I had a case of CBA and didn't do anything. Went for a run tonight though, 44 minutes easy. Though it was only about 4 minutes longer than my last run, my legs were much more tired but still thoroughly enjoyed it!

I agree with tirlittan, GreenSaints - it sounds to me like you are going from doing hardly any running to really pushing yourself but it is important to build up gradually or you will just keep injuring yourself
rachelhen - I am totally lacking motivation too but really want to run  I'm doing little bits here and there and hoping I will build up without noticing
tirlittan -Do I need to say anything else? I might fit one in tomorrow but if not it won't be until Monday at the earliest as I am away at the weekend. I will be coming at it with renewed vigour on Monday though. I really will

Hey,
Thanks for your responses and thanks for letting me in the club
I've been rubbing Deep Heat all day (and then rubbed my eyes. I can't begin to explain how painful that was!) and I'm walking a bit better.
Going to try and run again tomorrow night. I go with my best friend and she bought me some of those flashing lights. I look like a fat Christmas tree!
Hope everyone else is ok and running well. Remember to be safe if you go outsideDEBT FREE SINCE 25.07.14!

Welcome aboard GreenSaints and Rachel too
I went for a run this morning as it got light as I fancied going then rather than in the dark after work. Glad I went, nothing too quick just a 40min gently run.
Back out again this weekend to take advantage of the light days!final unsecured debt to repay currently £8333Proud to be Dealing With my DebtDFW Nerd 1154 Long Haul 1550 -
I'm afraid no running for me since whenever it was. No Shred either. No runs at the weekend in day light. Must try harder next week. Woke up with a cold on Sunday morning as well so not exactly motivated atm.
Hope others are doing better! Keep running!DEBT FREE OCTOBER 2012!Proud to have dealt with my debts!0 -

Well done fedupandskint! I cycled to work on Monday, about 5miles,then to friends house after,4miles,then training. Today back to work from friends house and then later cycle home so same again. I think I'll do Shred tonight as obviously getting cardio in already and then go for a run tomorrow.DEBT FREE OCTOBER 2012!Proud to have dealt with my debts!0
