I think you should think about backing up your important information and to think about doing a clean install with Window XP SP3. I have doubt that your copy of XP is properly activated. hence why your machine has never been updated and no one here s helping you.
It is too difficult to communicate and for you to communicate the steps taken, so no one will never be able to ensure whether the machine is actually clean. You have no firewall, no antivirus solution, you talk about being connected to a modem(I hope it's a router and not an ADSL modem). No one here can be sure as to whether you are actually following their instruction.
If the machine is not clean, SP3 won't install. if your copy of Windows is not Genuine, SP3 won't install.
It's time for a clean install.
Another problem you have is that I can see on your HijackThis Log, that Malware is lurking in your Documents and Settings, so unless you clear them up, you are in danger of transferring the files to your new setup.0 -
That's not quite true.hence why your machine has never been updated and no one here s helping you.
Other people are holding back because it would get too complicated with too many cooks.
Your advice is good:- Replace that hosts file then try to update the MalwareBytes database and run the scan again.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
Sorry, being thick, have gone into hostxpert link and can't see the hostxpert zip??

Are you joking? It took five hours to replace a HOSTS file(It still hasn't been completed) and still no inroads in to updating Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. Where were you? I was so tired.0 -

Hi, yes I need to back up more and I guess it's time to install Windows 3. Have not been able to update msn or IE for a while, however, antivirus updates daily. It didn't stop this though, did it, and can't launch it anyway now.
After I went on IE as against Firefox I saved the host file and managed to start the latest malware from Rik's link. I'm running a quickscan now.
Thank you for helping, sorry it's been slow and making you tired.
ps, yes, I did mean router

Where are those whom are 'holding back'??
Why haven't you been able to update?
As I said earlier, time to back up and reinstall. Trying to instruct you to do anything else could take too long.
Will stand back in order to allows those waiting in the wings to take over. Need to spend time with my girlfriend.

Your PM inbox is full........It's SP3 that you need.
As I wrote before, you information needs to copied and a clean install of XP SP3 should ensue. along with suitable protection.
There was no way I was going to be able to talk you through it. The worst being the backing up of your information.
Hands on is the best way.
No real need for the 'Techie' to take the PC, but I guess some people prefer to work alone.
