Ah, well, that's what I did in the end. I'm off to try again.

Right, not sure I copied the file correctly as it wouldn't actually open once I downloaded it- so just copied the link. When I tried to paste, an error message came up but can't remember exactly what it said, something about shortcut I think.

Pasting your link to the Windows address was fine.

I am on an old system - can't update msn, could that be why I can't open the host? Malware has always updated ok when I do a scan normally, but now won't, also the link Rik posted downloaded ok but won't open.

You weren't supposed to open it. Only save it to the USB drive. Once the file 'HOSTS' is saved, you can then copy and paste it to the correct location.

Don't worry..we will get this sorted. Even if it takes a bit of time, you will have a virus free, fully updated machine in the end. ;)

Virus free is hopeful, updated maybe aspirational :D

I think I'm not copying this thing correctly - do I right click and save link location? Or download then save link from the list? I tried both those but first time it pasted as shortcut and now it has pasted as a scrapfile. :(:(

Have you downloaded and saved it on to the USB drive?

You click on the link, choose 'Save' at which point you have a choice of where to save it. Navigate to the USB drive and save it there.

Do you have any files/photos/videos that you would wish to save that are on the computer?

when I click the link and choose save, I just get the download page, and can only chose to save as a link. This pastes onto pc as a shortcut. There doesn't seem to be any more options.

And god, yes years worth of stuff, some is backed up but not all, would need to re-save all to be safe.

This is no 'Download page', it's a direct download. There is no such thing as 'save as a link' in this instance if you click with the left hand side of the mouse, not the right....

Thanks, when I click (left...:)), choose save, it puts it on a list of downloads with no option to put on E unless I choose it off the list and rightclick

    Which browser are you using?

Either way you can just go to where it is stored on the computer, copy it to the drive and then take the drive over to the infected computer.
It's worth mentioning the the drive itself could now be infected, but that the least of your problems at the moment. :)
