Hi Gonzo,
I was reading about the White Paper yesterday and the one thing that struck me was how would GPs be qualified to handle the finances of a surgery? Surely their expertise lies elsewhere...? Would they receive training I presume? I know my Mum (who is Principal of a school) said that it has turned that way in Education in recent years and she finds it enormously difficult as her training was (obviously) in teaching and not accountancy!
well this is where it could end up in a big mess, as not only will they be dealing with the surgeries budget but also the budgets for all the commissioned services, such as the hospitals, community services, mental health, specialist services etc etc
what i expect will happen, and this is my personal thought, is that the sensible GP's will hire the current NHS admin staff from the relevant departments in the current PCT's to handle this side of the job (basically creating many small PCT's working for the GP's), which will basically mean all current NHS staff will become private sector workers working for the GP's - therefore in one go cutting the NHS pension pot and starting the move to privatising the NHSDrop a brand challenge

No job offer, no interview letter on the mat last night
BUT a letter from the university with an unconditional offer of 1 year on their Masters course . That has definately calmed me down a bit (obviously I will be studying rather than drinking!) Now if the Career Development Loan people could actually print enough forms and get one out to me we might be getting somewhere.
Is it okay if I get rid of my Credit Card debt but get a Career Development debt?

i have thought about it but 'cant' really at the moment as eldest child is starting uni in Sept, middle one is starting GCSE's and wee one doesnt get to see her grandparents often enough as it is
to be honest i am not massivly worried about my job as i have a very good 'skill set' with experience in multiple departments which i expect the GP's will be looking for,
i am actually more worried about what is going to happen to the services for the patients as at the moment the PCT's (which i work for at the moment) act as a barrier between the GP's and the other providers,
now this is being sold to the public as a bad thing, however i am just wondering what will happen once it is gone and the GP's are turning around to the providers and saying well drop your price even lower otherwise i will not refer our patients to you, therefore cutting down on local services since the providers cant drop any lower for what ever reason,
or the other way round where the providers turn round to the patients and say well sorry we cant do that proceedure as your GP will not pay for it so you will have to travel to the other end of the country if you want it.
as it is at the moment the PCT holds a massive budget so can compensate for some areas going over budget with the ones that stay under budget, whereas the GP consortia which are being planned will be much smaller (the PCT i work for is rumoured to be looking at between 5 and 10 GP consortia) so will hold a smaller budget (current budget split between all the consortia) and so have less wriggle room to balance these variations which can and will happenDrop a brand challenge

Congratulations Gonzo. The White Paper sounds like a bit of a dogs dinner - maybe you need to be on Question Time asking a question. Won't the GP's surgeries be like local authorities in that they won't be allowed to go backrupt? Are we back to internal markets? ( I need to go and do some reading on this!)
Thanks for all the good wishes Chaps. I'm studying Housing Policy and Management. I already have background in project management, planning and regeneration so I'm hoping (fingers crossed) once I get this I can do housing development because regardless of how the cake is being reduced there is still going to be a need for housing.
What I should have really done was specialised in housing when I did my HND in Estate Management 20 years ago but hey, the benefit of hindsight! I'm just looking forward to a solid year of study without worrying about my mortgage or trying to fit a full time job around my studying.

well my initial thought and reactions to it is that there are some very worrying possibilities as i said earlier this is the most worrying for me in regarts to what you have posted above
"1.22 All of this means we have a responsibility to ensure that funding is used as efficiently as possible. The proposals laid out in this White Paper are a part of this. They are intended to put the NHS onto a sustainable footing, so that everyone in the system – from the Department to groups of GP practices – is accountable for the best use of funding. We are very clear that there will be no bail-outs for organisations which overspend public budgets."
so in that sense these GP consortia can go bankrupt and would have to if they overspend, which could mean all the patients that belong within one of these consortia would suddenly find themselves without any healthcare provision as the money will not be availiable
anyways link to the white paper if you want to read
