Anyone got any experience of local authorities?? Short version of the story ,DH great uncle was in a LA run care home. When he died they handled all the burial arrangements, DH went to visit his grave at the weekend to find it was unmarked-no headstone, nothing. Should they have paid for it from his (substantial) estate??Debt-free...and staying that way...0

SRM, I doubt it unless it was specified in a will or something. Otherwise they'd be open to all kinds of accusations. I'm sure there are a range of families out there who would go from wanting all the money to themselves, to wanting something expensive, and anywhere in between. Although you'd think they'd have asked you first.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

Yes we will Elfen, just wanted to know where we stood first,as they were less than straight with us from the get-go. They didn't tell us he had died (even though they had our number/address) ,then they said he had left a very small estate, then when pressed they said it was quite substantial but they would take their costs (fair enough) and pass the rest on the the state as he had left no will.Turns out DH aunt and DH were entitled to share it..but we had to battle them for it, so we are not confident they would tell the truth! They did tell DH that burial would include headstone-but we don't have it in writing..Debt-free...and staying that way...0

srm, I would have thought it would go to aunt and DH too, especially if they're his only living relatives, as isn't that what happens if there's no will....And they ARE definitely sounding VERY cheeky if they said it would and there isn't one there....not even a wooden cross with a name and date plaque (think that's what my parents' local council does...my mum and dad already have plots booked!) Could you look on their website for what they do with deaths of people in care - even with a substantial estate, they should at least put some form of headstone in...bloody cheapskates.** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **

It was quite complicated Elfen. He was DH great uncle, who had married his own cousin, so they had to get advice to rule who should inherit. They said it could only go to a female line/relative, so said DH wasn't entitled. They didn't know about DH aunt till we told them. Aunt in the US pocketed the lot (500k),then DH was told he was entitled to a share, that it didn't die out with his mothers death-still with me?? Anyway-this is all about 5 years ago,but they buried uncle and had access to all his dosh but didn't even mark his grave..they could have easily asked us what to do but didn't bother...but if they didn't even bother to contact us to tell us he had died what should we expect?Debt-free...and staying that way...0
