Not very good at making things I'm afraid seasalt and I'm not sure if these might be too expensive for you as well, but they're a good idea, and may give you an idea of how you could make something similar?

Thanks Hippiechiq, those amazon ones were the cheapest I could find too and as I would like to get a pair each for mum and dad, DD1 who really struggled last year getting DGS to and from nursery on lethally icy pavements, and maybe myself and DD2 (DH and DS both have heavy duty fishermen's wellies so are less in need) it is going to cost a small fortune.:( I think I am going to experiment with fishing net and elastic and see what I can come up with. Wish me luck!:)

    Folks

I have asked you very politely to keep this on topic, so this is the final reminder. While there is some very interesting discussion in this thread, it is not staying on the topic of Old Style living and is becoming a daily chat thread.

If it continues to do so,it will be closed and I will ask you to continue your chat in the daily thread or the Arms.

    Thanks for your co-operation.:A

I'm so sorry Zippy, I know I am guilty of being a chatterbox and I don't really understand why the rules are the way they are as I don't see the harm. But I really don't want to make things difficult for you or others so will try to keep my gabbing in check. :o
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Sorry not been in much last few days. My wee orange stray cat seems to be dying and I was at the vets two days running (to no avail but a lot of money!) they dont know what's wrong. But I'm sitting at the back doorstep with him cuddling and stroking and today I got him to drink some water... so there is hope yet.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was - my daughter wants to start stashing food but has no cupboards at all. Tiny wee kitchen about 5x5ft and the larder is full of fridge freezer :) I'd love some good ideas for hidden storage please, in odd places :)
  • In cardboard boxes under the bed, Some sort of shelving put up on the walls somewhere, plastic storage boxes with lids. All mine are in the box room, the kitchen cuboards and the cupboards in the wall unit in the diningroom.

    Under the bed?

Does she have plinths at the bottom of her kitchen cupboards? They usually clip to the legs of the units and pull off quite easily - you can store stuff there. On top of kitchen cupboards. Under the stairs...

I can remember years ago reading one of the Famous Five books where they went into "Mother"'s bedroom to her special store and got a load of tins. Obviously where she kept the things she didn't want the servants to filch. I had a similar thing going in my last house :rotfl: - on top of the toy cupboard I kept all sorts of things which the rest of the family didn't know about, mainly because I got fed up with them taking the last of something and not telling me, then moaning that we'd run out...

    I appreciate the apologies :A

It's late and i'm heading to bed but wanted to give you a quick reply :)

    * Think of how big this website is and how it would run without rules or guidelines
    * think of how chaotic it would be if 70% of every single thread on MSE was filled with chat
    * Think of if you were reading a thread to find out if you can freeze milk , and for pages and pages it was all peoples chat - nothing to do with milk.... you wouldn't be able to find anything!:rotfl:
    * The daily thread is specifically for Old Style general chatter - and we sought permission for it to be on the Old Style board
    * The Arms is there for non moneysaving related chat

That's a much more pathetic reply than i would have wanted to give but bed is beckoning me but I wanted to acknowledge what you had said :)

Remember, Board guides are just normal people who want to help others out. We have rules and guidelines to follow and keeping threads [STRIKE]off [/STRIKE] on topic is one of them. (what a typo he he!):o

I genuinely appreciate the kind response. Now i'm off to bed to probably think of loads more things I should have said :p

As always if anyone is unhappy with the rules they can head on over to the feedback board.

Or if you are unhappy with a Board guides conduct, you can contact abuse (see my sig):A

Well, I've got a really old style question that I mentioned on the Preparing for Winter thread but no replies yet an wondered if anyone here might have some ideas? I was looking at various ice-gripper thingies that you put on the bottom of your shoes - partly thinking of my parents here - but was a bit staggered by the price and am wondering about making something. I thought maybe beer bottle tops sewn onto thick elastic would work (maybe not -too uncomfortable - or fishing net - plenty of that on the beach and even just the mesh may help with grip or wrap bits of it with wire...or...or am I just being mad even thinking about it - might buy proper ones for them and have a go at making s/th for myself? Any good ideas?

Here are a couple of ideas:

    Nylon stockings

Wood + nails (these double as a weapon, lol)

    Miscellaneous ideas

    :)
