Been to pain clinic and saw a different doc but equally compassionate. Were told there is nothing more they can do for Dh but they will still see him and give support. The Doc actually suggested alternative therapies and discussed the lack of sleep to. Dh told him about all the research I do into everything we do and the doc was impressed :jHe suggested using the tens machine which I bought for his original back problem but said put it on the other leg as that sometimes worked. How refreshing to meet such an open mind. Dh is sat relaxing with Dgs at the mo and de-stressing - pity the NHS doesnt suggest grandsons as a therapy :rotfl:

So we are settling down to get back on track with our o/s life as Dd begins her moving out. She has just taken her washing basket to the new house to try the washing machine and my electric meter let out a sigh of relief as she left:T

I am itching to get the house sorted but the final move will be Saturday so I need to be patient. Right its chicken lunchtime so I will catch up with you all later. Thank you guys again

Hi ginny, could your husband try acupuncture? I'm having acupuncture at the moment (a friend is helping me pay for it) for low energy problems and oh my goodness, what a difference it is making! I would not have believed it if I hadn't experienced it myself. I believe it is available on the NHS somewhere ....

Now for me it is chicken bed-time so I am off to put the chooks to bed. Hepzibah laid an egg in the cat carrier on the way home from the barn farm! The girls will be so stressed after moving from the farm to freedom that they will definitely need a good night's sleep tonight. As will I :rotfl:

Oh, in addition to two eggs, today I have also had tomatoes and turnips (homegrown) and three apples fell off my minarette apple tree :T One is now safely making its way through my digestive system :D

ETA Mardatha look away now ... I have two young kale plants that need planting out .... since we are on a kale theme lol

Thanks smiley, will have a look if acupuncture will work, possibly not with a dead nerve but its worth asking the Doc if it will help ease the pain or help him sleep

No. not frozen, just cold, out of the fridge - has to be hard fat for this method - I tend to use cheapest butter I can find as don't really want the hydrogenated fats that are in most margarines - but works with eg stork too. Saves all the "cutting-in" etc with a knife - and often can't be bothered to get my food processor out of the cupboard. Just keep the fat floured so that it doesn't stick to the grater or itself and move the grater about so you don't get clumps. then just needs a very quick rub-in with the fingertips before adding the liquid. I think - but could be wrong - that my mother originally got the idea out of a cookbook called something like "I Hate to Cook" by Peg Bracken? Wouldn't work with soft margarine though.

Ahhh - I see :) Thanks for explaining. When you mentioned pastry in your earlier post, I was thinking savoury pastry, and was trying to imagine grating lard :rotfl: Still, I would never have thought to grate butter either - what a fab idea!

Jeez - I just constantly feel like I've taken a "stupid" pill the last few months :oHormones eh? Who'd have 'em?

I seem to remember from school, rough puff pastry is made by grating the fat.

Dd has sorted everything out now, thank you chocClare for reminding me about that I will get her to check the credit rating on the house. I am in Manchester and the flour has been missing now for over a week maybe there is a shortage around here.

Bad news in the post Dh has to go to a group aimed on getting him back to work. He is blithely unaware of this as he is out today having a couple of hours fishing with his disabled group. I am going to ring a nice lady who helped us before at the local Dhss office.

Thank you all so much(as ever) for your support and kind words. Dh had a minor surgery 4 years ago which went horribly wrong and whilst they were saving his life they injected something (painkiller or anti emetic) into his sciatic nerve thus destroying it from the inside. He struggles to walk is in constant pain and sleeps maybe 4 hours a night. His meds regime is huge and has had side effects such as bowel problems - last year he had all the symptoms of bowel cancer and whilst it was dealt with swiftly and was negative the strain was horrendous. He was a builder and took up high level bank security till it became too much. The main problem is he was a sportsman, referee and cricket umpire.

Luckily we both have a very strong sense of humour and I sat him down when he got home and explained it all and luckily he managed to take it all in with out too much bad reaction. The problem will be when we actually go to the sessions. He is in the process of seeing a psychologist who hopefully will help him, but he cannot cope with group sessions.

Im not trying to bore you all to death here I just wanted to explain. We are off to the pain clinic tomorrow to see a wonderful, supportive doctor who totally understands - rare isnt it. But there is nothing really anyone can do for him but try to control the pain and after 2 years of seeing him they have not managed it yet.

So you see why this board is so good for me, I can talk to people who totally understand that what the government intend and what actually happens are 2 different things.

Oh Ginny what a worrying turn of events :grouphug: Would/can you appeal the DSS decision that hubby has to join a back-to-work group? Might you be able to get letters to support an appeal from your GP/Hospital/Psychologist?

I know what you mean about pushing him over the edge - if the same happens to us, it's unthinkable what affect it will have on my daughter, whose mental state is already worse than fragile at best.....I dread the post coming, I really do.

With regard to hubby not being able to sleep. When my daughter was particularly bad last year, frequently self harming - it was all such a shock to me, and I was so worried all the time, that I suddenly lost the ability to sleep. I went through 3 months where I would go several nights with no sleep, and then an hour or two at the most, then back to no sleep. Even though I was exhausted, I was working at the time, and my doctor was throwing everything she could think of at me, frequently saying, this one is definitely going to knock you out......none of them did. I also tried several homeopathic medicines, but nothing worked for me.

At the time, my health centre offered acupuncture on the NHS and I asked if I could try it. I went for 20 minutes treatment every Friday before work, and after my third appointment it started working, where everything else had failed. We're all different of course, but it's definitely worth a shot :)

    Folks

I have asked you very politely to keep this on topic, so this is the final reminder. While there is some very interesting discussion in this thread, it is not staying on the topic of Old Style living and is becoming a daily chat thread.

If it continues to do so,it will be closed and I will ask you to continue your chat in the daily thread or the Arms.

    Thanks for your co-operation.:A

  • Well, I've got a really old style question that I mentioned on the Preparing for Winter thread but no replies yet an wondered if anyone here might have some ideas? I was looking at various ice-gripper thingies that you put on the bottom of your shoes - partly thinking of my parents here - but was a bit staggered by the price and am wondering about making something. I thought maybe beer bottle tops sewn onto thick elastic would work (maybe not -too uncomfortable - or fishing net - plenty of that on the beach and even just the mesh may help with grip or wrap bits of it with wire...or...or am I just being mad even thinking about it - might buy proper ones for them and have a go at making s/th for myself? Any good ideas?
