    I appreciate the apologies :A

It's late and i'm heading to bed but wanted to give you a quick reply :)

    * Think of how big this website is and how it would run without rules or guidelines
    * think of how chaotic it would be if 70% of every single thread on MSE was filled with chat
    * Think of if you were reading a thread to find out if you can freeze milk , and for pages and pages it was all peoples chat - nothing to do with milk.... you wouldn't be able to find anything!:rotfl:
    * The daily thread is specifically for Old Style general chatter - and we sought permission for it to be on the Old Style board
    * The Arms is there for non moneysaving related chat

That's a much more pathetic reply than i would have wanted to give but bed is beckoning me but I wanted to acknowledge what you had said :)

Remember, Board guides are just normal people who want to help others out. We have rules and guidelines to follow and keeping threads [STRIKE]off [/STRIKE] on topic is one of them. (what a typo he he!):o

I genuinely appreciate the kind response. Now i'm off to bed to probably think of loads more things I should have said :p

As always if anyone is unhappy with the rules they can head on over to the feedback board.

Or if you are unhappy with a Board guides conduct, you can contact abuse (see my sig):A

    Zip
Aw, bless you Zippy for your thoughtful reply - and at bedtime too!:A I'm sure you covered everything perfectly, thank you. I may not always agree with the rules but I love this forum and I want to stay on the right side of the Law! :D I appreciate that you and the other BGs work very hard to keep things running smoothly ... here in OS I always imagine you as Super-powered Flyladies tidying everything into its correct place. :)

ETA Now I will stop yabbering and try to stay on topic!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

My Dd is in the process of moving out and everyone is pulling together like the old days. Bits of furniture arriving from various relatives. I am really proud of how she is managing her money and still shopping for bargains - well she has to pass Mr T she she can pop in and check the reduced section. Its all too easy to use takeaways when you are so busy. She has quite a big kitchen so storage shouldnt be a problem, though the rest of the house is a bit short on cupboards. One thing she does have which I envy is an airing cupboard!! Oh the thought of warm towels is a luxury. Just given her an emergency box all ready for winter.

Glad your DD is sorted Ginny and glad your DH took the news so well, I have no airing cupboard either but hopefully will have one when I move house. I used to have one and it was great for getting clothes dry in the winter.

Ok ta. Kitchen is no good, absolutely tiny and no room for anything. I will pass this on , ta.
Would she have any room for shelves around the top of the walls? I've seen it done in tiny cottages where they go around the room, above the door frame. So they would only be good for longer term stores I guess.

Seasalt, not sure where you looked for the ice grip thingummies. I'm after a pair of Yaktrax and they seem to be a lot cheaper on Ebay but the prices have gone up recently so I might try to do without. I was wondering about rigging something up with elastic bands with knots in them.

Does anyone here get big bags of flour (25kg I think)? Cos I will get a good discount if I get this but was put off by the thought of weevils or other beasties. I have flour containers that take a kilo or so but don't want to buy loads of them - would be expensive and they'd take up a lot of space.

Sorry not been in much last few days. My wee orange stray cat seems to be dying and I was at the vets two days running (to no avail but a lot of money!) they dont know what's wrong. But I'm sitting at the back doorstep with him cuddling and stroking and today I got him to drink some water... so there is hope yet.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was - my daughter wants to start stashing food but has no cupboards at all. Tiny wee kitchen about 5x5ft and the larder is full of fridge freezer :) I'd love some good ideas for hidden storage please, in odd places :)
Hope the kitty is getting better,Sorry i/ve only just caught up with this thread after several days,i'm very low at the moment.
re storage, I have stuff in boxes under the bed, lots of jams etc and have put cup hooks all over the place, lots in the spars and beams. good for hanging washing on coat hangers to dry. I dont have a drier.

  • Here are a couple of ideas:

    Nylon stockings

Wood + nails (these double as a weapon, lol)

    Miscellaneous ideas

    :)

How do you find these things felicity? :T Thank you very much - especially for the first one - the braided nylons - don't wear tights myself, altho use any I can get hold of as as plant ties in the garden so might have some in the shed. Like this idea as it's so simple.

Glad Ds house move going well, ginny.

A warm airing cupboard is a luxury. It means your hot water is kept turned up fairly high and your tank is not as well lagged as it could be. Many of us still keep a full tank of hot water 24/7/52 even though dishwashers and washing machines are cold fill only these days, and a lot of us use electric power showers rather than filling the bath.

We have gas warm air heating with hot water, from the same unit. Our gas fitter pointed out to us and our neighbours that on our (new) heating units we could turn the hot water off by the switch at the wall and the water from the pilot light alone will be sufficient in the summer to heat enough water for most purposes. A kettle of hot water helps if you need to do a bit of washing up by hand. Our hot water's only just been turned back on as the outside water temps have dropped. In the winter the heat from the hot tank stops the cold water tank & pipes (directly above) from freezing.
  • Sorry. Life in Termoil, I should have thanked you for the sock idea too. Have tried this and it does work, brilliantly to begin with, but ten less well as i suppose the sock itself gets clogged and iced up. I liked the yaktrax too, Nualabuala but too dear! Thrifty Felicity posted a link to a great japanese idea though using plaited nylon tights/stockings and that is what I am going to try - wouldn't damage floors either I shouldn't think.

And also meant to ask Mardatha how her kitty is?

Cat had a drink last night and again this morning and even attempted a couple mouthfuls of food. I squished a syringe of cod liver oil into him last night as well. I like the OS way of nursing sick pets when at all possible - not mad on vets. But he's an outdoor cat and will only come as far as the back doorstep , so I've got a numb bum with sitting on the floor cuddling him :)
I will go up to the daughters and have a long critical look at where to store provisions. She is up a really awful steep zigzag road and wont be able to nip out to the shops in winter at all if it snows... she really needs a good storeroom.
One thing most of us haven't got in common with our really O/S living predecessors, is coal fires + airing cupboards. I've got coal but most folk havent... in our last house we had an amazing airing cupboard. It was big enough to fit two of the white metal clothes airers in side by side, and the washing dried in no time. It wasnt lagged at all, but I figured what it saved me in tumble dryer costs made up that. And the fire was always on anyway. This house has a modern lagged hw tank and its not the same.
I think though that our really OS grannies would have known how to use everything possible to their advantage and not waste anything, and thats what we are trying to do in here isnt it:)

Hi Nuala, I keep flour in 4l ice-cream tubs which I get from work and stack under the stairs (all the same size so this works). However, go ahead and buy your 25kg sack, then decant the flour into large ziplock bags (or even just freezer bags). Put them in the freezer for a day and this will kill anything. You could then put your individual bags back in your sack if you haven't got room, or indeed, leave them in the freezer to keep it full (and therefore more efficient), taking them out as you need the room.

All the LDS (Mormon) sites recommend this method - they have to keep a year's food storage as part of their teachings, so their sites are full of great tips (and their basements/store-rooms are to die for but that's another story).
