We have a shelf full of cookery books and now my OH is (mostly) retired, he's able to indulge in his love of cookery. As I grow a lot of our own vegetables, many of our meals need, of necessity, to be planned around using our crops. Menu planning is helpful but when you've reached the 20th day in succession and are still trying to use up your surplus tomatoes or courgettes, you do occasionally need to break out of the routine and eat something different which you really fancy, rather than doing yet another day on Courgette Duty!

Only ever had one cookery book and that was Delia.. gave it to my daughter cos I never used it. Don't think she does either:rotfl:
Can I ask for help and advice re padding out meat to make it go further ? Also I'm quite interested in a mincer to make my own sausages & burgers. Does anybody in here do this ? I need to be careful what I add, as too much of anything like lentils will send OH blood sugar too high. I find veg is the best thing to add but all I can think of is chopped up bits of frozen broccoli and cauli.. It does get boring. But we are eating too much meat.

Maradatha - home made sausages :)

:D God Zippy, I am really going senile. I already posted in that thread last Dec when I found an old mincer in the shed ! I totally forgot. The mincer we threw out in the end because it was cast iron and rusty and not safe. I might look at Lakelnad and see how much theirs are.
  • mardatha I make my own burgers but keep them very simple now, so just mince beef,(or sometimes a mix of half beef/half pork sausagemeat if I've got it)salt pepper and then some breadcrumbs or oats or leftover stuffing mix and then give it a really good squish together with your hands and then form into patties and chill for a bit in the fridge so that they don't break up in the pan. You don't need an egg to bind it as long as you really squish it together well :)

with regards to storage has your daughter got a blanket chest/ottoman tucked away anywhere that's not in use? I used to store my tins and jars in mine before I got extra cupboards put in,you can get quite a lot in the them.

I'm another one who doesn't do well with meal planning so will check out that link, thanks ChocClare. :T Oh, and thanks for the flour storage info, that's fab. I've seen some of the Mormon sites and get quite excited at their storage rooms. :)

Sorry to hear you've been low ZaraZara, hope you'll feel better oon.

The tights idea sounds good Seasalt, let me know how you get on.

How's the kitty doing Mardatha? Hope it's doing ok and your bum isn't too numb!:D Re reducing the meat, I know lots of OSers have mentioned using oats to pad out mince - not sure if that' any better for blood sugar. I love carrots, peas - any veg at all really mixed in too. Also, would you try soya/veggie mince mixed in? You can get it frozen and just fling a handful in to whatever you're making.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

I don't think I have posted on this thread before, so hope it's alright to butt in, but oats would be good for your husband wouldn't they Mardartha? You can bulk mince dishes out with oats and I think they keep blood sugar stable. I put them in stews as well to thicken up the gravy and they disappear fine. Also grated carrot is good. Sorry if someone else has already suggested this, not read on yet.

Tried that veggie stuff and its hellish :) I forgot about carrots actually TY. Oats I can do some but not too much or he whines. Am thinking about buying a mincer seriously now, but with things going the way they are I will think until I'm blue in the face before I spend any money :)
Cat is much much better thank you . Sleeping and eating a lot but back to his old self. Wonder where you could look up really OS pet medicines/nursing..
  • I'm another one who doesn't menu plan the "proper" way. I do not have time or the right mindset for spreadsheets. I shop for the storecupboard, replacing basics as they get used and maybe buying a couple of meat/fish items depending what's reduced/on offer at the shop. The menu planning part comes when i look in the fridge/garden/freezer etc to see what left overs there are and what needs using up and what I could make out of them - and these days I do quite often scribble down a list of what we could have for tea for the next few days. Saves standing in front of the fridge every evening trying to think on the spot with everyone demanding to know what's for tea. (My grandma's reply to this question was always "legs of chairs and pump handles" and that usually shuts them up!) I HATE to throw anything away - my goal is not to have any left over left overs IYSWIM!

I keep soups in the freezer for lunches and egg and bacon are a staple. Mum gets me packs of bacon from the market and I fry chunks up with lots of veg with cheese sauce for pasta - bit of a favourite here. I don't plan as such just keep a stock in. Now Dd and co have gone its so much easier as Dh eats whatever I put in front of him. We also love pancakes which are filling and feel like a luxury to us with a bit of ice cream. I have been thinking of making my own sausages too as I dont like eating stuff that you dont know what is in it - I think thats the last thing on the list I need to sort out. Dh is now addicted to home made yoghurt with a bit of honey or hm jam which is really saving a lot of money. And this is the man who was brought up on fray bentos pies (eeeuch) and pudding and chips from the chippy.
