Over 10million Britons are a bit foolish then, if they are putting themselves in debt for a holiday. imo

It reminds me of those adverts that goes something this:

There was enough left over for a holiday (when taking a loan out)

£650 for a dog cabin? Chuck this is crazy. Why don't you rent a dog for the week?

Because Mills (my lab/springer cross) would never forgive me (and neither would I). The ferry isn't cheap I think a normal cabin would only be about £80 cheaper, but I'm not sure as I didn't investigate the MSE route of dog renting

    villa ... for 3 weeks
You can't be very important if they let you off work for three weeks. Most companies don't let people off for more than two weeks, max.

Does the dog have the best bed/villa room, because he's more important in your household?

    :)

My question is why people dont have lots of holidays.

Go an stay with relatives and then you can return the favour to them.

Loads of time off, keep up the family and cheap. What's not to like.

I'm retired, my wife is an actuary and it's quiet in Oct so they actually like her to take her hols then. Mills thinks the best room is the one that I am in, but my wife won't let him sleep in the same room because he snores

Not everybody has family, or family they like, or family with a house/area where a holiday seems attractive. And don't forget, now we're all living in shoe boxes, most people's family don't have room for them.

We usually go up to Northumberland to visit my parents for about 4-5 days twice a year, although because of the 3 weeks in Spain my wife hasn't enough holidays to go twice this year.

    This is news???

Come on, where have you been? This has been the ongoing case for a long time now.

Yes, we've had a significant economic downturn. Yes people have lost their jobs. At the same time, this downturn has left a significant number of people relatively unaffected. They are therefore thinking "what's the big deal? I still have me job etc, no biggie, I still want me 'oliday"

The trend in recent history has been for a number of holidays a year, not just one... Some people's ideas of cutbacks is to only hae 2 or 3 holidays.

Thing is, I believe that this economic event isn't going to be a quick shock that is relatively quickly fixed. Society has had 10-15 or even more years of easy access to credit, unsustainable consumer borrowing, and unsustainable consumer spending. The vast majority of people are not going to learn to amend their spending/consumption behaviour in a short space of time. Many will have never experienced having to "cut their cloth" before. They now have expectations (which they believe are entitlements) that they can have this, or spend that, & if they don't have the other then they are suffering hardship.

To change the spending habits & expectations of what has primarily been a consumer driven society for many years will take some time.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
