The must have generation

Since the government bail out, banks have grown richer and borrowers have remained reckless. The phrase 'moral hazard' comes to mind.
Over 10 million Britons will put themselves in debt to pay for their summer holiday this year, research revealed today........

...... When asked why they borrowed money to pay for their holiday, nearly one in seven people said that they have to have a holiday every year, irrespective of their current financial situation. Meanwhile a seventh of respondents said they had to be seen by their friends to be taking a holiday every year.

I never took a holiday for over 10 years (1992- 2002) after I graduated, I was just too busy with work and business, mainly because I was a mature student who graduated at 32 and thought I had to work much harder to catch up on the 10 years I had lost on my peers

My last holiday was 1995. A week in a 1-bed flatlet with my sibling in Cornwall. I got the short straw and had the pull out sofa.

i think holidays are the best part of life. i don't see any virtue in not taking them. but they don't have to be that expensive.

I agree although taking our dog with us is essential, which tends to make them more expensive as it eliminates package holidays, this year we are renting a villa in Spain for 3 weeks in october. Not overly expensive as the villa is £600 for 3 weeks (in total) and the car ferry with a 'dog cabin' is about £650 (I forget exactly)

Over 10million Britons are a bit foolish then, if they are putting themselves in debt for a holiday. imo

£650 for a dog cabin? Chuck this is crazy. Why don't you rent a dog for the week?

It's only been in recent years that everybody's had paid annual leave. I've certainly had many times in my life when taking time off work meant additionally losing that pay, so a double whammy.

One person's "doesn't have to be expensive" is different to another's. Once people think they're worth it, reason goes out of the window. If they're borrowing, they won't borrow to sleep in a tent in wet Wales if they can borrow for a 4* hotel somewhere hot and happening.
