Victory - my youngest 2 have had the same thing this year too. My 12 y/o in particular has really piled on the pounds since he began secondary school. I am shocked to see the change in his size in the past year, and he's not the tallest of boys either, so he probably won't grow out of it in a fast growth spurt. He seems to really have a big issue with food, and I can already see the signs of him having a problem controlling himself at a buffet, or at what he sees as 'free' food. The house rule here is that they have to ask for any food they want to eat, so I tend to control what they have here. I bought smaller plates for mealtimes months ago, and they don't even get a weekly sweet treat anymore, so it has to be down to what is going on outside the home, and friends sharing treats with him. We attended a friend's BBQ at the weekend, and he was straight in there filling his plate with too much. Today I was at a friend's house, and I took my lad to play with her's, and I'd taken some cupcakes round I'd made, which he ate 1 of, and my friend had bought 2 small McVities cakes, which her lad shared 1 of with my lad. That's a whole chocolate loaf between the 2 of them. I found it really hard to see him do that, but his friend is rake thin, so can obviously get away with doing that every now and again. My poor lad simply doesn't seem able to have those extra treats without them going straight onto his body. It is hard to find a balance, because I don't want to project onto him any negative feelings about food, but I do want him to learn to be sensible, and if he does have some problems about controlling his ability to not overeat, then to find ways to be more aware, and to learn some self-control techniques. It's a tricky one. Let us know how you and your lad get on.

BB - I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. How is she doing now, and have there been any improvements in her condition yet? My mum had a stroke in her early 60's, and then has gone on to have several mini-strokes in the years after, however careful management of her condition seems to have been the key. I do think it depends upon how major the initial stroke is, and whether it's detected quickly enough. Gentle ((hugs)) to you, and hoping you're feeling much better to cope with all that's going on in your world very soon.

Many thanks for your kind words guys. Still feeling a bit odd about how I feel regarding my family stuff. I have no idea what will be happening re. a funeral, whether it's burial/cremation, etc. I thought I'd do my own thing on that day, and spend some quiet time laying my own thoughts to rest, and remembering the positive times, and appreciating the good things I gained from him. I hope, regardless of whatever had gone on in the past, that my father had been able to find peace, and forgiveness with his god, and was grateful that he still had family with him at the end of his life, because it is more than he really deserved, so he was lucky. What's done is done, and I stuck by my values, despite pressure in the past from my siblings, and know I made my choice for very valid reasons, and was the only one who wasn't prepared to sweep matters under the virtual carpet. Being a spanner in the works is a hard role to adopt.

Well done with the losses so far, and good luck with the weigh-ins still to come. Can't say I'm hopeful myself this week. Been too miss and not enough hit this week for me. Really need more focus, but it's been elsewhere.

Granny - don't worry too much about the gains, but maybe try to keep to STS's for now? It was how I tried to manage my gaining... up to a point, but my knees were swift to remind me when enough was enough! How is your hip now, and will you be as busy come the new term, or have you managed to find a way of slowing work down yet? Hoping all is good in your world, despite the weight.

I think too much focus is put on food to be honest. Its not really seen as fuel for the body anymore, and more like a guilty pleasure. My mum said that when my brother was younger he would eat and eat and eat, hed have a big breakfast, lunch, come home and have four sandwhiches, dinner and then something later on, matt was the same and every other teen boy i know, they kinda need it?

BB: Really sorry to hear about your mum. I wish her a speedy recovery.

"Mammoth" lol, how appropriate :-) good choice of photo there eric !

Talking about chicken and turkey, even some of the more expensive packs have a whole load of "extras" added. Bernard Matthews do a Sliced Premium Turkey Breast pack, being "Premium" you'd expect it to be pretty much 100% turkey breast, but these are the ingredients from it...
"Turkey (80%), Water, Milk Protein, Salt, Stabilisers (Carrageenan, Sodium Tri, Di and Polyphosphates), Lactose, Potato and Rice Starch, Flavouring (Lactose, Egg Protein), Colour (Caramel), Dextrose, Antioxidants (Ascorbyl Palmitate, Alpha Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Sodium Ascorbate), Modified Waxy Maize Starch, Vinegar, Honey, Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Mustard, Butter, Pepper"

Compare that to asda smartprice chunky chicken breast at about half the cost..."Chicken, Dextrose, Salt, Glucose Syrup"
Still a few "added extras" but I'd expect a smartprice product to have far more than a so called, premium brand and it doesn't.

If there was the choice I'd pay the extra for cooked free range turkey or chicken but neither tesco nor asda sell it, either at the deli counter or prepacked :-(

yep, and thats on top of what they do to make it retrain water ...

why i used to get it carved off the bird, they can not inject whole birds legally in the uk, hence it cost stupid money ..

Morning all, it's a lovely sunny day here.

Well done Eric, Efrieze, and everyone else who has lost weight this week.:T:T

Sary, sorry about your dad. It can't be an easy time, even though you were estranged. I hope you find a good way to work through things.

BB, sorry to read about your mum too, here's hoping for a speedy recovery. People react so differently to strokes, and many make almost complete recoveries, I hope she does well.

Victory, welcome back to the UK, I hope you had a great holiday!

I haven't done so well this week, I'm dreading weigh in on Saturday. I've managed to stay off junk food. No choice really as I've just become unemployed and we are extremely hard up for the forseeable future. Given the current job market, I think it will take a long time to find new work. But, being at home means that I have more time to bake cakes and so on, which isn't good for my weight. My job involved a lot of walking too, so I'm going to have to kick myself into moving more to make up for that. I'm struggling with that, because I feel pretty down at being out of work and I'm very worried about money. I just want to slump on the sofa, but I definitely don't want to start piling on weight again, so I need to kick myself into action.
