Och genealogy is very much a strange obsession
I was 'abused' as a kid having to trapse for hours round graveyards looking for a headstone....sheer torture for a 10 year old...
How I have come to love history I have no idea? My mother also made me walk for hours to see something only she wanted to see. Don't know if worse was through some park to find a totem pole in Vancouver (we never found it) or 5 miles through the pouring rain through the streets of London. Or like 2 miles in the pouring rain to get to a McDonald's in thunder bay (over 20 years ago I dare say) when I spotted the mall pretty early on on the hike. Ma didn't listen. Next day it was a case of 'I told you so'.
One thing to all parents. Know when you're children are tired from walking miles. They'll just get grumpy and play up if you don't listen.

A bit more saga then:
The idea was to be out by 10 on Saturday morning and needless to say we weren't. The owner's daughter appeared and listened to DH listing helpful thinks like 'You really need to clear the drains' which he did in pleasant tones interspersed with comments on what a cosy cottage it is and what a good holiday we had. I asked him afterwards how much she had taken in and he said 'Not a word'. Sadly her Mum's health is giving cause for concern.:(
Still, the things that needed to be said were said (nicely), and we managed to leave the place in a reasonable state and drive off at about 25 to 11.
We got as far as Bodmin before hitting huge traffic delays and the first hour took us about 30 miles, by which time the car was getting distressed. It was that horrible sort of traffic which neither stops nor appears to go anywhere. On and on we went: eventually there were puffs of steam issuing from under the bonnet. DS2 turned his ipod into a Sat Nav and issued prophecies about there being An Incident ahead; the traffic forecasts ignored the SW in favour of the Midlands (which for all we knew was where the queue started) and London (where some sort of event seems to be happening) and we looked longingly at the signs for Newquay airport and wondered why on earth we hadn't learned from our previous trip to Cornwall 20 years ago.
After a very very long time the two lanes of traffic funnelled into one - no incident materialised - and everything went tickety boo apart from our car which was glad of a short rest (while we phoned the people with whom we were supposed to be having lunch). We found some bottles of water in the luggage and topped up the water. The car protested at starting again by issuing white smoke from the exhaust - one of the few car symptoms I think I understand - so I said to DH that I thought we were burning oil and he said he knew. Suggested dipping the oil to check if there was any left: turns out the car hasn't got a dipstick and DH had been unable to replace it.
We limped on - I did manage to get through a few Sudukos, mind you. The traffic was heavy, but it kept going.
We arrived at DH's cousin's for lunch at half past five - thankfully they are lovely people and we had a really nice few hours with them, also seeing DH's auntie and uncle who we get on very well with.
On the road again for 7, I think... longest haul now over, car running a lot better now there was enough cool air going through. We made it to our friend in B'ham for about 10pm.
I have to add here (while I remember) that there are two stories missing from this anecdote. The first is something nice and unexpected that I'm not going to post about until I know for sure (nothing huge, just nice) and the second is Friend in B'ham's story, which is his so I need to leave it out. I know that's frustrating!
Had some toast at his house then fell asleep - shattered.
And now I need to do a spot more unpacking. More anon.Miggy
