*Sneaks back in because there's something that absolutely must be said.*

One of the books I bought at the car boot sale this morning was a great find. I have a little collection of old recipe books, being fascinated as I am by social history and how my parents' generation lived. Today I picked up a 1963 copy of 'Farmhouse Fare' - it didn't look much and was only a pound but when I thumbed through it, it was the feel of the pages, you know? Soft from use, though the owner must have been a careful soul as there's no writing apart from the bookseller's pencilled 6/, and no marks on the pages except the occasional corner turned down to mark apple bread or rhubarb charlotte.

The recipes are something again. Of course food has changed since then and this, as it admits itself, is aimed at the farmer's wife who needs to feed the workers. Plenty of stodge :D and some things we wouldn't really think of (three recipes for hare pie, anyone?) but I think some others may find their way onto my table. Sausage puffs? Deep fried mixture of thick batter and sausage meat: apparently it works and I think DS2 would eat them. Some little jam tarts made with potato flour? Old English Cider Cake? A list of wines as long as your arm, some of which feature things I've never heard of (agrimony, mangold, cleat...) maybe I won't try those just yet, at least not before I find out what they are.

The amazing thing about these is that they fill up the eater for very little money. I know it's calories and nowadays the trend is to avoid those, but for manual workers and sports enthusiasts who need to keep up their energy, very useful.

Time I went to get ready for work.

    No, but i do now.....................:p :D

Ermm, in that case, what does it do to your teeth?

Thanks for the tip. Saves on cleaning materials. :rotfl:

I also was given a tip to clean my windows, last week. The smallest amount of washing up liquid on a wet cloth, and wipe clean with newspaper. Works too, ( if you can afford a newspaper. ) :rotfl:

You must be doing something right. :D

You could always ring up the free papers and complain that they aren't being delivered? :D

Time for a list, as the annual migration draws near and I'm not ready. In fact, I'm finding jobs to do, which is usually a displacement activity.

    Today:
    Meet up with friends
    Fix bookshelf
    Visit Mum
    Bake 2 cakes

    Wednesday:

    Shopping with DD
Update instructions list for DS1 who isn't migrating with the rest of us
    Clean out fish tank

    Thursday:
    Pack

To be added to as necessary.

There is no escape from MSE...

Even if there were, I never manage to stay away more than a couple of days. :)

Today's list got done, with the exception of fixing the bookcase. Would you believe, there are two pieces of wood which have splintered away and which need to be glued back in place, so I dusted everything down, set the pieces aside and went for my super-strong wood glue. Amazingly, I found it almost at once, which is more than I can say for the splintered pieces of wood. I've searched and searched, and can't find them anywhere, so the bookcase has a very empty middle shelf and the books are all in heaps on the floor.

    *Sigh*.

I did manage to womble 53p which is great, and very slightly makes up for spending £6 on lunch with friends, £17 on food and just over £10 on non-foods. This is similar to last week. I've used store cupboard ingredients tonight and baked a dozen small cakes, a dozen muffins and a tray bake cake. Some of that lot has gone in the freezer, and some has gone in DS2 and me. The rest is going in tins.

I need to check the balance on one of our accounts but that can wait till tomorrow - I mean later today.
