She doesn't see very much at all and is a very dignified and private country lady and for someone to read a letter to her they have to shout so loud that everyone can hear and she is embarrased by that and just says 'do it later' and then puts it into her handbag unread, never to be seen again. She doesn't like to be a 'bother or make a fuss' so she gets left alone. I'm sure that handbag is a bottomless pit and no-one has ever seen what's in it. My OH used to tease her about it - said it must be chained to her wrist and contain the kitchen sink :)

    Hi Flaxseed,
I think I saw that bag on Mary Poppins! :D

Mum has had a reasonable night and the consultant has seen her this morning. He / she wants the cardiologist to have a look, so it's sounding as though we're back on the 'was this a heart attack?' route. I suppose it's quite likely as all the coughing would put pressure on her heart. That might also explain why the oxygen made such a difference.

The difficulty if it's her heart would be that she'd be moved to a different hospital which is a lot harder to get to, but she's best having the specialist care.

I will go and see her when I go down to my daughters on 23rd and hope she is back in her home by then as Nottingham to Worcester and back is quite a step.

I can see the difficulty. For Mum, although she can't hear, her sight is good so everything is much more straightforward.

I'm sure she will love a visit from you: I remember how my Dad's face lit up when my sister and I walked in after not having had a visitor for ages. (We lived the other side of the country).

I don't know if she is allowed flowers (maybe artificial ones would last longer! :D ) but I often leave some for Mum so that even if she can't remember my visit, the evidence is there and it's something lovely for her to look at and other people to comment on.

Talking of flowers - hayfever's besetting the sufferers today. :(

    Thanks LT!

She's looking back to normal but being in hospital has disorientated her so she took a lot of persuading that she needs to stay for a couple more days and I hadn't come to take her home.

A change of scene tends to do this. It brings it home more than usual that she can't cope mentally. She couldn't sort out that she was transferring to a different ward later and was expecting to see a particular landmark from her window which is actually near the nursing home.

She's refused to have a heart monitor so they can't do anything about her but clearly at the moment her heart is working well. What we don't know is whether there is an underlying problem.

I've been a bit tense but am hoping for a better night tonight and to be allowed an out-of-hours visit to Mum before work as I'm starting at one in the afternoon tomorrow and doing the sleep-in shift (nice £25 more or less for being there! Sleep ins are there just in case there's an emergency because the waking night has to have back up for certain situations).

Money-wise this has been a good day - using vouchers, offers and a co-conspirator in the form of DH, I saved around £6 on the shopping. DH then saved about £7 on meat for the freezer! I asked him if he sprinted the fastest when the reductions were being made and he said yes! Actually we would never normally spend what the joint cost, we are only getting it because it's reduced and it's something everyone will eat, but even so we probably saved about 50p on what a chicken would have cost.

I might do the sums if I have time and inclination tomorrow but I don't think it's likely.

Now although it's late I'm going to make a cake (the yeast cake mix is still going) then go slug hunting. I'm quite pleased with myself because I've not only managed the distasteful task of burying two dead birds, but I've done a small amount of gardening too. A huge downpour at lunchtime (about 1/4 inch in ten minutes) actually overwhelmed the water butts - the one nearer the downpipe was overflowing despite having a cut-off valve! However the good side of that was that the soil was soft and I've planted a sage which has been sitting in a pot since last year. The old sage is coming to pieces and it's nice to see a new plant just starting off.

    Hello Miggy,

Other than the disorientation I'm pleased to hear about your Mum's progress.

I hope all is ok with you too. I understand the pressure it can be with all the worrying and still having to function fully in normal day to day and work areas.

So, as your Mum is getting well looked after with lovely messages on here, all of my hugs are for you. You're genuinely doing a wonderful job of everything. x

Aw, thank you, both! I thrive much better on a hug or so!

Yes, thanks, I slept okay, and the cake got made. In fact (as the mix had been growing and not being used), I have a banana tray bake, banana fairy cakes and sultana and mixed spice muffins. Yummmm-mmmy! No good for the waist line of course but will help keep DS2 fed. He has got into the habit of cooking himself a meal in the middle of the night. Didn't take long to get to that stage either. I hope he gets a job and has to revert to normal hours (says she who works 9pm to 7.30am).

No news of Mum yet, they'll still be doing the rounds of the wards.

I'm not even sure what is happening with work as my supervision has been moved to 1pm and she originally thought she'd get it done in half an hour, so I might even be able to come home again before starting the 3.30 shift (not my usual slot).

I've also said I'll try to fit in a visit to Mum at lunch time as I'll be at work later.

And guess what? The weather forecast was right. Absolutely pouring down. I'm going to see if I can find a waterproof on the coat hooks and take spare socks to work. If I float past your window, give me a wave of encouragement (if you can do so without getting drenched yourself). :)
