Will do! worth a try even if it doesn't sound hopeful0

As far as I know, car allowance is not taken into account, it is purely the difference in mileage.
They work on 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles per annum. So the difference would be (40-16) x 10,000 = £2400 which is the amount he would get tax relief on.
If you phone your tax office tomorrow, they should be able to talk you through it.
Only downside is that it sometimes triggers a self-assessment each year.0 -
Some good news!
Got Council Tax over 12 months instead of 10 - so saving (in a way) £30 a month!
Found loads more in the attic to ebay!
Found a pound coin in the pocket of a coat thats going for ebay - profit!
Mr P had a No Spend Day (apart from neccessary parking)
Called CCCS today too - been putting it off long enough. Got our Debt Remedy - 2 choices now:
1 - do DMP for 3 years to clear debts or....
2 - sell the house, clear the debts in one, but run the gauntlet in getting approved for a new mortgage.
Any thoughts?
With our recent bounced DD's, and possibly going onto a DMP (will probably do DMP anyway - makes sense to reduce the debt while waiting for house to sell) is our credit score goign to be so rubbish that no-one will touch us?0 -

I would really think about holding off on selling your house, it is an asset and you will have it long after debts are cleared but it is your choice.
I know the debt seems huge to you but it is doable and I have seen people here clear more - like me someday hopefully.
My DH is self employed and therefore a DMP is not an option, as he would never get credit again.
Some jobs are funny about it too apparently.
I am not putting DMP's down in any way, sometimes I wish it were an option for us but it isn't so I try not to think about it.
With ebay etc and cutting back where you can, you may find you can manage to get down yourself without wrecking your credit score forever (well 6 years anyway)
Don't panic -we are all in the same boat and at least we are not sinking!!!

Thanks RMC - I must remember that there are others out there with a lot worse problems than us - sorry.
It just all seems baby-steps at the mo - does it take long to get the momentum going and see some results?
Thanks for the head-up about the effect on jobs of DMP too - didn't think about that - must check (without giving too much away!)
So with DMP not an option for you, whats your action plan? Is it all savings or trying to generate more income? Has DH's business been hit by recession?0 -
Oh God don't be sorry, all debt is relative! To some £1000 may as well be a million.
It is baby steps, and some days its backward steps! I am not yet seeing major results but at least I am mostly making all my payments and dd's but sometimes like this month. it just fell apart.
I went thru every single dd and cancelled some we really didn't need. Mobile phone insurance is one I can remember. A cheap phone is £20, do I really need to pay £7.99 to cover an expensive one I have on contract, nope I dont so the insurance went. Also we were grossly over insured so I cut that back too. I shopped around for cheaper house, buildings, life and car insurance and did them all thru Quidco so got some cash back. All of that saved me about £150 a month, well not really saved because we couldn't afford it in the first place!
Also we try very hard to manage what we spend. I too smoke! Did manage to give up for 3 mths and then the s**t hit the fan at work and back I went. But I am trying to smoke less and only ever buy 10's as the more I have the more I smoke! DH is a lottery freak, he used to spend £20 a week on it, now £5 (the price of 20 fags he justifies it to me). I now shop at Lidl and try very hard to be sensible about what I buy.
Business has not yet been hit by recession, thank God. But we did not manage it well financially and also run up debts there. So, as you can see from my sig, I am working hard at those down first. Thats for two reasons, a) so that the business continues to function even in quieter months (Dec, Jan and Feb) and b) the less debt the business has the more money I can take from it to pay personal debts. My salary alone does not cover our outgoings.
Oh another thing I did was change mortgage to interest only. I just rang Halifax, they asked if we had funds to clear mortgage when it ends in 20 years time. I said pensions would do that - give them the figures they wanted to hear, and hey presto mortgage payment reduced by £400. Now I only plan this to be for a year because I do want to reduce the capital as well as the interest and I dont want to have to pay a lump sum at end of mortgage term but by doing this I gave myself a little 'breathing space' to get on top of arrears and get some sort of balance and system going.

Hi again,
Well, baby steps it is then! I need to pull my finger out and get the price-comps done on the home insurances and utilities - just put off by how long it took to do my car insurance (2 full nights, but I might have been a bit too conscienctious, I think I checked everyone). Still waiting for the cashback to clear on that though.
I am a big Aldi fan - more and more of our shopping is coming from there.
Got 2 inactive CCs cancelled today too - any idea how long it takes to start repairing the credit score? We've decided not to apply for anything until the end of the year at least, and not let anything else flag up (like bounced payments) if humanly possible.
have got bids on 3 ebay items already :-) its a start!0 -
Fantastic news on ebay!
When I did the insurance, I did price compare thru quidco (go compare was one I can remember) and then went from there.
It does take a while to get into the MSE swing, and as I said, I learn something new every day.
A thought - have you looked at reclaiming credit card and PPI insurance fourms, you might be in luck thereLBM Feb 2010 £62,700 Total Debt Jan 11 [STRIKE]£49,403.84[/STRIKE] £47,530.32.

I totally sympathise with you, my hubby (however much I love him) just doesn't get that his constant vehicle changing & other bits has left us "tits up" basically & now we've no choice but to get help!
Good luck with getting him interested, I found even in black & white it seemed to miss the point!!"There's a little witch in all of us"🔮🪬🧿DEBT FREE 06/2018Mrs SD’s Decluttering 2025 ⭐️ 🥇🥇🥇0
