Have you got any local butchers that do offers?? There's one in a town near us that sells "meat for a week" for £10 - 7 different cuts of meat and really tasty.

My OH is again a big meat eater and I'm not so fussed so he makes the 7 pieces of meat last 2-3 weeks. Brill bargain for us.

    Hi t4mof,

Good idea, I'm off to the butchers for gammon tomorrow (sunday lunch and hopefully all weeks sandwiches) - I'll have a look.
Might investagte corned beef and tinned meat (ugh) but OH might eat it for lunches.

    Hi again Choc-addict,

My thought is that me and OH are in this together, and although I earn half what he does (i'm part-time), we have to pool resources to get out of this. I think my problem has been that I've always been good with money, being brought up to believe that if you don't have the cash in your hand, you just don't buy it. So I thought I could deal with this on my own, and OH believed me! So it's my fault in a way for allowing him to pass it over and get off scott-free. But its time to make him stand up and take responsibility - without reducing him to a wreak.

Morning piccalilli....nice name by the way! :)

Perhaps by making OH take some responsibility he will see the enormity of it all but also the difference it'll make to your lives once it is all under control by making some simple cut backs. You sound like a fab OH to have on board and i'm sure with your good practice with money and OH hopefully having to face up to it a bit more then it'll be on it's way to being sorted :D
  • Hi Choc-addict,

Morning to you too. OH is back home tonight, so may not post tonight - depends on how tired he is whether he is up to talking or not. If not it will be chats tomorrow - it might take him a while to read all this! Catch up soon, good luck! :)
  • Just had this months CC bills in - we are now going backwards on the Virgin - the interest is higher than the payment we are making
Going to try for a 0% card in my name (checked my credit rating and it seems ok) to try to shift some of it. Wish me luck!

Oh Piccalilli I feel your pain - my DH was (and to some extent still is, he spends on lunches in 3 days what I spend on a weeks shopping!) a nightmare. Once he used the cc without telling me and my reaction (I was at the end of my tether) was to turf all cards in the fire! Best thing I ever did, because he was so shocked at my outburst!

I go out of my way to tell him how much I have reduced the debt by as often as I can. I ask him everyday how much he has spent (he gets fed up and grumpy but so what). He will never ever say that I am doing well, he will never ever admit that he overspends but I know he is definately more concious of spending simply by listening to him say 'that shop is a rip off', or 'do you know how much x costs now'. He also runs his own business and now talks of how he can use ingredients more efficently etc. He also works VERY HARD - which is double edged because when I complain about spending and debt he gets annoyed saying he can do no more etc......................however, as we know, there is always another penny to be cut out somewhere

Good luck, have subscribed and look forward to congratulating your successes!

I produce a graph of our spending each month and show OH. His main contribution to our overspending is petrol and car costs. I just show what we have spent in all areas and add 'it is fine, as long as you don't mind working until you are over 60, because we can't clear the mortgage if we spend like this' - he seems to be getting the message!

Piccalilli, is it worth having a bills account and a joint account for shopping and petrol ( with your own accounts with only a little money in if you feel the need to have some personal money) - you are in it together so you might find it easier if you had immediate access to see how he is spending?!
Aiming to be debt & mortgage free by November 2018!
  • Nice to meet you REDMADCURLS,

Just checked our debt level and its only reduced by £100 since the start of last month :(

And Natwest just declined a new CC - I know I shouldn't have but have tried Santander as I'm an existing customer - we'll wait and see...

Will your DH not take packed lunches at all? Mine starts the week ok, then leaves all the boxes in his car, so I don't have anything to pack them in by Thursday (and the ones that do come back in tend to have mouldy sandwiches left in them! So I don't bother as its a waste...)

Sounds like you're getting through to him though, if he's thinking about how much things cost then that's a good start :)

We're off for a camping break this week, so we'll see if I can keep the spending down to a minimum -have done a meal planner for the week out of store cupboard stuff :-)

You are doing well so far :).
My only other comment is that groceries are still way too high.
