  • I've posted some ideas on your other thread which may be worth a read? I can feel you're not in the best of places in terms of job focus (don't mean you're not job focussed just that you're quite upset) so if you can keep an open mind, these ideas might help.

I was simply giving advice, maybe a bit blunt, but the way I see it is, in times like this people need to swallow there pride and get them forms into the nearest supermarket, at the end of the day everyone needs food..

Poorly, it looked much more like judgement than advice. The good advice was an earlier poster suggesting a CV be tailored. When you are older than 18, and have your degree and a levels and GCSE's try applying for a job in a supermarket in an entry level position.

WHY would they waste their time going through training and procedures with you when its blatantly clear its a stop gap till something more suited to your experience comes along.

Stating that you are over qualified for a job is not showing a lack of effort to work, its reality

Oh, and as for the local Supermarket... it has a waiting list of 2,000 back in 2009. I wouldn;t be surprised if its double that now.

Being "overqualified" means I CAN'T do basic jobs, is the most stupid thing i've ever heard!!

    Problem for me?

I have 11 Gcses A-c, three A levels, 1 year into my Bsc Computing with Business course, worked as an office administrator, sales executive, now going to be a systems clerk, all by choice, I drive, car paid for outright by myself, I rent a flat privately, and am completely debt free. Not bad for an 18 year old?

you are completely missing the point young man
people are not saying the job is beneath them - nor that they wouldn't do it if they were offered it
by being overqualified for a poistion and employer is unlikely to consider and applicant for their vacancy
because they realise that as soon as a suitable vacancy occurs for the overqualified person in their area of expertise, the overqualified person will probably leave and they will ahve to recruit all over again

whilst you are clearly capable of passing exams and are doing quite well for yourself, you have little or no understanding of the "real world"

you are an employers dream - young, CHEAP to pay and keen to learn
when you get to 54 like my hubby who lost his job in May, people often don't consider you for roles due to your age, my husband has applied for numerous roles and simply cannot even get to interview stage

he is currently completing a masters degree, has taken his Prince2 project management course this year, has had his CV reviewed by a professional service and is very well qualified for all the roles he is applying for
but - sadly life experience and a HUGE willingness to work seem to count for very little these days

If nobody will give you a job, make your own job.

I knew from the title alone whose thread this was! :o

OP, have you ever heard the quote “If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten"? If you're having no luck, you need to make changes, e.g., rewrite your CV, tailor your applications, broaden your search area, change career, change your attitude...

    Briona

I have made my search wider and for a minimum wage too and still cant get interviews

If you really WANT a job, there are plenty going!

You sound like nearly all people on the dole,

"theres nothing going im so angry"

Yeah right, where I live, there are new cleaning jobs nearly everyday, but I bet none of them apply for any of them 'cos its "cleaning", any job is better then no job, even if some shop isnt advertising, ask anyway, not all advertise,

I'm sorry but you can always try HARDER!!

I have 20 years experience in accounts and cant even get an interview at minimum wage paying over 100% less than what I was earning so I do not see how any company would give me an interview cleaning!

What!! Too qualified for entry level jobs?!

    ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS?

How can you be too qualified so you CANT do the job?!

Surely the job will be EASIER?! if your "over" qualified?!

Also, entry level jobs can be hard work, not as "easy" as people make out, brushing it off as "oh im too qualified"

    IDIOT

Yes you can be over qualified for a job - FACT!!

Here is one reply from a job I applied for :
'Many thanks for you application and CV, unfortunately this position is ‘work wise’ and most definitely salary wise, a 2nd jobber'

    I then replied:

I am aware the salary will be a lot lower and since I am out of work I have to by law apply for jobs at minimum wage

    They then said:

'The salary would be approx 13k it is a very junior position, which will be under close supervision'

    and again I replied:

'I am prepared to work for £13k though. Do I not have the experience?'

    he said:
    '

As I clarified it is a very junior position!! We require a person with very little experience, as stated probably junior 2nd jobber, we do not require someone with your amount of experience.'

I then had to say this:

'So you don’t want someone with experience? I find that bizarre to be honest but your choice'

    they then said this:
'we have made our position very clear. Good luck'

Given a choice I will not hire over qualified people as when something comes up in another business they are at the right level of skill for, they will be off and leave me. For many jobs I just need a steady eddie with longevity.

You can rant all you like but I make the decisions and I decide I can't be bothered giving up yet another week of my time to hold interviews when Mr "No, I really do want to work here forever" with the PhD offs and leaves.

so how is ANYONE meant to get a job when we are told to apply for jobs at minimum wage? Sorry to say its that mentallity that keeps a lot of people out of work
