Yeah right, where I live, there are new cleaning jobs nearly everyday, but I bet none of them apply for any of them 'cos its "cleaning", any job is better then no job, even if some shop isnt advertising, ask anyway, not all advertise,
I'm sorry but you can always try HARDER!!
You're quite right, RossDave10. They need to try harder. Every shop and workplace has toilets, and they can all do with the occasional clean.
Ten minutes ago, the phone rang, and it is an ex-boss who heard I was back in town and would I like a job. I start Monday.
It just goes to show that if you've been to the right school, been to the right university, shave your head every day and have specs with lenses that go dark in bright sunlight; then doors (And I'm not talking about the doors to the toilet cubicles.) will be open to you. I just sit here and the job comes to me. Wow! It's like being hit by piano, and all that other good stuff.
Gerrup off your rear ends, you people. The vacancies are there just waiting to be filled.
Yours etc.

That new role may have been luck to be honest, from a sheltered and well feed life.Only joking well done, please tell us that its not a "consulting engagement involving feeling coordinator" and it's a job that's going to make a difference to us other hard paying tax payers to bring us back!!
I think there are jobs and I agree people just don't effectively job seek because there life styles unlike yours exclude them from that type of thing. Some people are just not looking I must admit.
On the whole however I do think and I have witnessed people who do not deserve the jobs they are in and if a recruitment process was set up for them to re-apply for there own job, they would be shown the door. Just as one may view the property market as stagnant, so to is the job market by people who do not deserve there jobs. Hence the feeling of there being no jobs.
Have you actually gained a job in the past 2 years via a recruitment process?:DThe harder one works the luckier one gets!0 -

Thanks, DM. It is a permanent job.
Light-heartedness aside, I have been job hunting from time to time, including the early 1980s, and it is easy to get despondent. And, as you say, you are looking at the people who are doing some jobs, and you are thinking of a dozen other people on the dole who can do it better, including yourself.
I have been told that most jobs are never advertised, and are filled because of whom one knows. It's getting like the music industry. Now that you mention it, I haven't landed a job via a recruitment process for seven years. And I haven't had a job via an agency for about thirty years!
Good luck to you.0 -
Hi
For me what is worse is how unemployed people are viewed as being less important, in fact lesser altogether. Why should having paid work be a measure of your worth or even your self worth!
I have started a blog, I dont know much about blogs or tweeting or any of that stuff but Im trying to get a movement together to turn the tide. Well you have to start somewhere. Id like to create an online community to help unemployed people. To inject some positivity and maybe even have the odd rant :-)
But Im aware there is blogging etiquette. So far my revolution consists of me and my cat Carlton. Would some of you mind joining my blog, contributing with the odd piece or comments.
Where possible Id like it to be positive. I hope I havent over stepped the mark and if I have maybe you could tell me how you would have preferred to be approached. I really just want to help unemployed people like me. I know enough not to post a link until I have permission.
But I did want to answer your question and my answer is in a climate where 100% employment is no longer possible why do look down on unemployed and when Vodaphone only has to pay 1 billion of their 8 billion tax bill...who is the real criminal and we are sypposed to respect them!
Okay Ill get off my soap box now. Anyway thanks for listening x0 -
Some people cant take cleaning jobs because they have families and mortgages and its a fact that sometime they need to remain on benefits to keep a roof over their head.
I know a self starter a real hardworker who tried to take a job the job centre gave him and he gave his all but in the end was losing so much money even working a 40 hour week that he nearly lost his home and had to give up.
Nothing is black and white.
Some people have come from broken homes and havent been able to get good educations because they've been concentrating on surviving.
When I had managerial jobs I only ever employed unemployed people to give them a start in life, I knew I could train anyone to start at least and they have gone on to flourish.
I dont know why people have to make throw away negative comments about the unemployed as if we are all the same and have the same circumstances. Wouldnt it be aweful if we applied some intelligence and even compassion, let alone constructive help to the situation.
Why be negative when positivity is equally available. Why be mean when kindness is equally available.0 -
I think your blog about unemployment is a great idea. I would certainly like to join, as I have many things to say about the subject.
It will also be nice to sound off without being shouted down by those who seem to be under the sad misconception that all unemployed people are just moaners!UnemployedNotStupid wrote: »Hi

I think a blog about unemployment is a TERRIBLE IDEA? Why, because it might bring people down.
I am in the middle of a big recruitment drive for a major employer in the Midlands. Between myself and 2 colleagues we have had a lot of applicants. believe me, there are some people who we WANT to give jobs to, because their attitude shows that they want to work, and we want to give them that break. I have sent letters out to people telling them they were a close second, but we still love them and WILL be keeping them on file for when we expand....(as we cannot offer more jobs than we can pay in the early days)
Being unemployed is not always a negative. Being willing to learn, understand the role, and be a role employee is a positive. The problem with online groups like this is they mgiht drag the mood down. All I can say, despite knowing how hard it can be, is keep the optimism alive. No thread I have read on MSE to date does this!
And I will also say, that if you GET THE BASICS right, believe me for a lot of roles that will be a start. The Basics: a positive results focused CV, tailored covering letter matching skills to role arriving on time for interview, and being appropriately dressed etc. That would put you in the top 10% of all applicants. I work for an attractive major global brand, not some local company.0 -
