II eventually got through to a charming young man who told me that in order to cancel my application I had to go into a branch. I said that I applied online and he said it didnt matter. I said that I could not believe that I had to go to a branch to do it

I'd start getting used to it if I were you, it seems to be standard Santander procedure.

Want to change your address details? You have to go into a branch.

Want to make a foreign transfer? You have to go into a branch.

Want to close an account? You have to go into a branch.

They are THE most infuriating bunch to deal with!

I didn't trust them with giving Natwest my dd info so I moved them myself, much less hassle!

Might well do that, at least we will have control then. I would need to check but I think the easi switch where they switch the DDs is a condition of the £100. It's a while ago and I can't remember.
  • I have received£50 in compensation (already credited to my account, in addition to the £10 I had already received), from "Group Customer relations". This is for three weeks without access to any of my accounts and half a day wasted journey into my local branch (I live in rural area). I am tempted to accept the compensation, but not only is it insufficient, Santander appear to be in denial about the magnitude of the problem and their responsibility for it. The letter claims "I have passed a copy of your letter to the manager's in your areas and have asked that the situation be addressed to prevent further reoccurance" this gives the impression that it was an Alliance & Leicester problem, and a failure of their staff to deal with customer issues. If there had been no takeover then I would have never experienced these problems and continued my happy 30 year relationship:jAlliance & Leicester (and before that Giro bank).
What are the offers being made or is £50 the going rate for this fiasco?
  • Can I go into a Santander branded ex-Abbey branch to deal with my A&L accounts yet or will I be told to go to an A&L branch?

I've been receiving Santander branded statements since the end of June.

Just that there is two Abbey branches within 5 miles where as the A&L branch is 20 miles away.

They gave me £75 after 3 weeks of no access.

I am now at 6 weeks with no access ...

Yep - sure can :) I always use the ex-Abbey branches now, especially ironically enough in Leicester where the A&L branches are absolute chaos :rotfl:

  • The accumulated monthly interest from my two year bond opened on July 6th that should have been paid straight into my current account as I requested has now been credited to my current account.

My thanks to Darren of the Bristol branch of Cantstandher for correcting the problem and if he's reading this, bad luck Somerset didn't win the County cricket Championship.

I was sent a letter stating they'll credit my account £30 as a goodwill gesture for being 2 weeks without access. This was 1 1/2 months ago. It's now been over 2 MONTHS since I had access. AND to top it off the £30 has NOT been credited to my account. I now go into branch every week just to get a mini statemen (cashpoint statements do not work)

I've alredy switched accounts to First Direct, but also complained to the FSO about the shambles...2 months with no access...ridicolous!

Any update on faster payments - as far as I can tell they no longer work even up to £250?
    I think....

As far as I can see it depends upon the destination of your payment - I have found payments to Halifax don't go Faster, but those to Co-op do. I also notice that those to A&L that you want to go the same day get the date changed to one or two days hence and sit there in Pending until the date arrives, and then go immediately at some point during the day! All very random and mysterious!
