Just out of interest, if/when the sort code does finally change over to the new one alone, what do customers need to do, if anything?

Do those making payments INTO the account (via interest payments from other account, for example, etc) need to be notified by the customer?

How about when the customer makes a payment FROM the account, via Direct Debits and the like - again, does the customer need to notify all of the payees?

If so, this seems like a LOT of work!

I also notified several people who paid into our new account and this was actioned very quickly, just a few days.

All those drawing money from the account automatically cancel the original DD before instigating the new one so the work you have to do is really minimal.

I think a few phone calls is by far the best route unless you want to risk Santander and do without access to your accounts for several weeks.
  • On speaking to a friend of mine about this (who is an accountant) I've been told that Santander should sort out any transaction issues as it was they who changed the sort code.

Of course, we have to hope that Santander do it right and don't make any more mistakes ..........

When was this sort code change initiated anyhow? And why? My friend (the accountant) says that it's unusual for sort codes to change.
  • The sort code change took place as A&L accounts were migrated to Santander - there was a post somewhere in MSE that seemed to suggest that this was due to some duplicate account numbers with Abbey takeover - although I don't quite understand that as the sort codes should have kept them unique............... so I can help with the WHEN but not with the WHY; sorry!
  • Interesting, thanks. I don't see how Santander can possibly expect all of their A&L customers to contact all the people who they have direct debits with their accounts, regular payments outgoing, incoming, etc, etc, etc. As my accountant friend says, the sort code change was instigated by Santander so it SHOULD be Santander who make any necessary changes. They caused the 'problem' and it's up to them to sort it out.

Would have been nice for Santander to have told it's customers rather than relying on MSE to distribute their news - not having go at you rb7oaks (thanks for info). Also a bit of clarity and communication would be nice from the company.

Not my problem soon :rotfl: I'm downloading my statements from website for last couple of years to put into finance software - dull dull dull, but better than having no records. Why didn't I keep it up? 15 mins a month is all it would have taken :(

    Oh well

Who told you this? Santander or your Post Office?

I don't believe it's true or if it is it hasn't been announced and hasn't yet happened.

I've used the Post Office envelope system several times in the past few days and it's worked fine.

Both, but no timing was mentioned.
  • I wouldn't keep your hopes up about the Direct Debits/Standing Orders switching over seemlessly or being able to use both sort-codes!

I had an email from Paypal telling me they had tried to collect payment from my account but were told it was now closed. I can only assume it was the change of sort-code and have now added the account again with the new code.

On the plus side they have now at least changed my home address back to what it has been for 12 years after deciding to alter it to something else at the changeover.
  • I have never had any problems with A&L until very recently. In fact I still haven’t. Last month I received a letter from my Santander CC stating I had not made my minimum monthly payment and was now being charged £12.00 and must make my monthly payment asap. I was somewhat confused as we have a direct debit for £150 each month to the CC as we are trying to clear it asap. I called to clarify what was happening to be told there was a problem with migration. I made a payment of £150 over the phone and my £12 would be refunded. I check my bank statement this month and no payment has been made to the CC again. I tried to call and complain but my A&L bank put me through to Santander CC who don’t work weekends. Having been away for a week and unable to deal with this I am waiting for the next letter from Santander complaining I have not made a payment. I am sorely tempted to move CC which I was looking to clear by Apr- May next year any way. Rant done my question. Santander are very quick to sent out a bill for £12 for their mistake. Can I bill them for my time spent sorting out this issue which is not in anyway shape of form my doing.
    Cheers Ken
