Am I a right-hand lane hog?

Just to also point out that most driving schools now offer immediate follow on lessons for motorway driving as they recognise that lessons don't actually allow learners to go on motorways. If you don't feel happy or comfortable you could always try to see about a couple of lessons like that and hopefully get an instructor who will point out the rules and how they apply to mway driving in particular0

Don't worry - it's all perfectly normal, probably half of us are like this when we are new to drivng and most of us overcome it once we've become confident of our abilities.
The rest just do it wrong and annoy all the other drivers they encounter for 50 years or so!I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

I come on here genuinely asking for advice and just get insulted. !!!! the lot of you!:mad::mad:
I wouldn't get too upset; it's probably because we've all sat behind people who do this and drive for miles just because they can see a vehicle in the inside lane, and they just won't move over. I know it happens to me regularly.
Just get used to driving in the left hand lane when you can; it really is bad practice to get used to sticking in one lane - it doesn't do your skills any good to just sit there, you should drive to the individual condition of the road and the users, not just do the same thing time and again because that's what you are used to.
It's like the people who drive at 45 in a 60 zone no matter what the road condition, then when they encounter a 30 zone, they just sail through at the same speed [45]; without paying any attention to the road conditions or other users. All too common I am afraid.
I'd consider a session with an advanced driving instructor if it really is worrying you, moving from lane to lane.0 -
OK I accept I've got a lot to learn- I've only passed my test a year ago and I've been very ill so haven't driven properly for a bit. I've lost a lot of confidence. The Leeds Inner Ring Road is not a typical road- there are blind sliproads and some people just pull out onto it right in front of you at speed and frankly I feel safer on the right hand side! I genuinely thought I was making the road safer by giving these people more space. And despite the 40mph speed limit people drive it at 70mph and above..
Ignore the rudeness - just part & parcel of a public forum unfortunately. As you note there are a lot of bad drivers out there, and it is refreshing to hear someone actually taking the time to find out if they are doing the right/wrong thing!
Have you considered doing Pass Plus? This is really useful if you are under-confident and will teach you to deal with a range of situations, including motorway driving technique, driving in bad weather, driving at night etc. I really recommend it - I did it shortly after passing & it really helped. Cost about £90 for 6 lessons, but many insurance companies recognise Pass Plus in return for a discounted premium so you can usually make the cost back pretty quickly.
Hope that helps0 -
I was going to say everything flyingscotno1 said, except they said it.
Stick to the left hand lane whenever you can (ie there aren't vehicles in it). And stop stressing over the speed limit thing. I personally agree that there should be no need to overtake you if you are going the speed limit, but it happens. I tend to drive at 30mph in 30mph zones, meaning I have to endure unremitting tailgating. But this still doesn't alter the fact that you should not be in the right hand lane unless you absolutely need to be.
Get yourself a copy of the Highway Code and refresh your memory; if necessary book some refresher lessons.0 -

Ah, the good old 45mph Club, don't you just love 'em? :rotfl:0 -

But if they're going AT the speed limit you'd have to be going OVER the speed limit to overtake them. And if you are directly behind them you'd be going at the speed limit too so why would you need/want to overtake? Just wondering.
I'm not being funny, but do you know how accurate your car's speedo is?
The reason I ask is that it could be understating your speed up to 10%.
Your speedo says 70mph but in reality you're doing 64mph, so it's perfectly possible that the speedo of the person behind you is showing 65mph because it's more accurate.
So please don't assume that the people overtaking when you're doing '70' are actually speeding, they might well not be."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed.
