You didn't say the traffic is queuing or there was congestion to your right.

However lots of people undertake when the lane is completely free due the driver in front of them not going fast enough even though they are driving at or above the speed limit.

Then there are those who tailgate because the driver in front of them just happens to be overtaking those on the left of them safely but not going at a fast enough speed for them even though they are driving at or above the speed limit.

There was less traffic in my lane.

I would recommend the OP and other new drivers take Pass-Plus lessons so they can familiarise themselves with motorway driving in the company of someone who can tell them how they should do it. I also think this should become a licence requirement, i.e. a 2 part driving test, the 2nd part should be taken within a few months of the first, as there are so many examples of bad driving on motorways.

OP i can see your logic of being in the right hand lane but when people are undertaking you then surely thats a sign you should move to the left,

It's the A58 (M) Leeds inner ring road which has a slip road leading off the right hand lane - it takes you to Vicar Lane/North Street.
Once saw someone go up there and they started driving through the no entry signs towards the wrong way down the slip road for the other side of the carriageway. Poor lass looked rather embarrassed, but at least she didn't actually go down there or cause an accident, lol.

And that really is the rub of the matter and probably the reason not many are bought to book for the offence, vague conditions such as moving in ques, similar speeds, conjested conditions etc etc isn't exactly well defined in my view.

To the poster that undertook the police car, don't breath that sigh of relief for another 13 days yet :D
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

you forgot traffic islands nobody over there seems to know how to use them;)
to op keep left untill its time to pull over into the right keep to the speed limit and dont give a flying duck about anybody behind you.
Of course we do, at a roundabout you either stop look at other cars stopped at the other exits, smile at each other, count to 5 then proceed, or option b is to approach the roundabout, get in line with you exit, close eyes and accelerate. Simples, how can you go wrong with that. But yes I agree it is very comical watching people at roundabouts here.

Well, there are plenty of dual carriage ways all over the UK that a learner could be taken on and the rules are exactly the same as a motor way,, just short one lane.

Though,, in other countrys they have specific lessons dedicated to motorways BEFORE they pass..

I have no worrys for you,, followed a police car doing near a 3 figure number up the m1 with a van once,, all I got in the services was "dident think that ruddy van could reach that speed!"
