In terms of a ring (and this is opinion not experience) I don't think it's about how much it costs or what it looks like, it's about what it means, and in terms of a ring lasting as long as it's a graded metal, ie gold/silver and you look after it I think it should be fine
when I get engaged I'd like a band type ring or something small rather than a massive rock thing on my finger, but that's just my preference and I'm sure whatever my lovley boyf buys I'd be over the moon

You need to do second hand. Is there a pawn shop near you?
There is only so much gold in the world and it has all been reworked umpteen times so everything has been used thousands of times.Retail is the only therapy that works0 -

Thank QoNMW!
Yes i see your point and i think it's probably what I've been struggling with in a way. The idea of going into a chain jewellers and buying a ring just doesn't seem right. i was thinking of going second hand more for price, but just the short bit of thread, and typing and thinking it over I think the idea of going second hand may mean i get something with more character? I'm newcastle/durham way if anyone knows of good pawn brokers - or just second hand jewellers.
Never thought about it from the only so much gold in the world point of view, but that fits with my beliefs too. Hmmm was it second hand Rose? I can see a nick name beginning already...
Only thought is the spook factor of second hand ring.. Maybe I've watched too many horror films. Oh and Harry Potter.
Like the oversized dressing gown- is that more material for your money?? :-) - I'm currently in an M&Co sundress bought with vouchers as requested for christmas. Hardly been off my back in this weather :-)
thanks for the thoughts - would still welcome any others... very new to this game!!

WELCOME wigsey XX
That's the one - my dad's health food shop is on there but since I've moved away from the area I haven't been for a hunt round the chazza shops or the vintage shop for a while.
There are a couple in Woolton but I've never found anything decent clothes-wise in them - tends to be nice quality but a bit too grown up if you know what I mean?
Wageslave, I didn't realise you were new too. Hello!!
Wigsey - how unhelpful of the shop assistant!! I'd say just pick something that you like in terms of metal/stone/design - doesn't matter what other people think or suggest. There seems to be an awful lot on offer in white gold or normal gold with diamonds but they wouldn't be my choice, I'd far rather have silver with a more interesting stone. If you're not very into jewellery then it might take a bit of hunting round to find something a bit different that you like but it'll be worth it. Just be openminded about where you look - one of my friends got her wedding ring from Argos for under £100 and it's lovely and I've just found an opal ring in an antiques shop for under £15 which I'm super chuffed with as I've wanted one for ages0 -

this was actually a freebie from my boyfs mum, (brand new, she'd never worn it) I was happy to take it off her hands.
If you stick around you'll soon see that I'm a second hand junkie (although Vix (goanmad) is the queen of second hand), other than my underwear there isn't much that I buy brand new. Nearly all my outfits are made up with charity shop buys, carboot bargains, jumble sale steals or hand me downs. Occassionally the odd thing from primark or a high street store, but it pains me to pay full price for anything!*wonders when they will make dressing gowns acceptable day wear?*No new toiletries challenge - use up the stash first!NSD Jan 2/150 -
I love second, third, fourth hand stuff. We are all just a link in the chain.
Find something that speaks to you and make it your own.
Someday you will pass it on and a little of you will go with it.

I've been in your dads shop for a nosy when I was therethe vintage shop is fab isn't it, I saw a gorgeous 70's long, long sleeved dress in there but was so unsure about it I left it, I think it was reduced to £6 too, prob gone now I imagine. Mostly 70's stuff in there and I prefer 50's (or 80's I know the shame), the shop next to the red cross charity shop near quiggins in the city is fab for 50's but quite expensive, £35 - £40 for a dress, I would if I had an occassion or really fell in love but for every day wear I don't think I could. God I'm such a tight !!!! sometimes lol

I justify it to myself that I'm doing my bit for the planet by recycling when really it's just a more affordable way to feed my shopping addictionI do love it though, it's been a hobby of mine for years.
