How are you getting on now Mike? Has it sunk in yet? Have you found new homes for all your belongings or are you still shuffling around unpacking your bits and bobs?

Edit - I said bits and boobs. Not sure that would work really.

Going well! Just so many boxes of crud to sort through and dispose of. It doesn't seem I'm making any progress. How did I get to have so many bits of rubbish?

Just need to sell some stuff on Ebay and Boob's your uncle.

I always need to check twice if I write either 'just popping in' or 'am very busy today'.
    Don't ask, ;)

Have a wonderful time with your boys and enjoy your new home. I bought some new RED SHOES today. Fed up with purple.

A bit more research Vince Cable in thislondon highlighted the following scheme
"A scheme called Trust Mark launched in 2004 provides a credit check and search for county court judgments. It now covers 12,000 firms." How could we raise the profile on this? Can we lobby Trading Standards to do some kind of promotion of it

I am struggling to find anything about making sure that any cases that have been won are honoured without cowboys getting out of paying. I am probably not looking at it logically. I am going to have another think from different angles. Maybe I need to think about the business law as a whole rather than just cowboys. Mmmmm - slinks away again to do more thinking.

Mike - sounds like a good weekend, hope you are sitting in front of that tv with a bud again now watching the match. I want Spain to win!

    Cheri,

Vince seemed to say whichever scheme they implemented didn't really work.

The contractors go bust and then open up again under a new name. The police aren't interested because it is a civil matter.

    1. We can encourage people to avoid this situation by a big publicity push on people checking tradespeople on companies house website to see if they have gone bankrupt before.

    2. More important I think is to do something about the farcical charging order situation where it seems they are made but NEVER implemented.

What is the rule about criminals and stolen goods or the creation of wealth from illegal actions like trafficking drugs or prostitutes. In these situations they go in and seize the goods or an equivalent value. Presumably they still do that if the person has a partner or family. Why can't they do this with the house in these cases?

Maybe that's a question for a legally minded MP?

  • I share the same frustration as you Butti, especially when all assetts are put in the wife or parents name as shown numerous times on Cowboy Builders! They know exactly how to dodge responsibility.

The point before about naming dodgy builders was at the beginning of Mike's thread, cowboy builders did not accept Mike's house as a project as they couldn't fing any previous victims, if they couldn't, how can any of us. It was only after the One Show that more victims were identified. Had his name been put out in the open, could anyone of the other victims been avoided? How was it possible to end up with so many victims and so many CCJ's if all the relevant checks to whoever unearth nothing? Would it still show up if builders suddenly became 'secretaries' to a new firm while the 'wife' or 'mother' were 'director' etc.

Don't understand how the law can say it's OK for rip-off builders to stay in their nice comfortable homes when they have maybe 5 or 6 families facing financial ruin and left with properties in the same condition as Mike was? Does not compute? It shouldn't be the only way victims problems can be solved is to apply to the bbc and pray they make it to the top of the pile!

Would we have a chance of getting changes to the law without the suggestion of a website where people can report it's happened to them? Surely highlighting how big a problem it is would be half the battle. Most of us couldn't believe how disfunctional the legal system was.

    Sorry... Hi everyone!
