    I have a question about cooking with frozen fish. I've just been inspired by this thread and got some frozen cod in Aldi to make a fish pie with. Now I never normally buy frozen fish and tend to make my fish pies with raw fish.

    Should I cook the fish first, use it as frozen bits or defrost it slowly in the microwave (I want to eat it tonight and wouldn't have time to let it defrost normally)

    I don't want an iffy tummy!

    I normally steam mine first and then flake it, that way I can make sure that all skin and bones are removed.

    I'd poach it in half milk half water with a bayleaf (or use all milk if your less tight fisted than me) then use the poaching liquid to make the sauce. I also flake it once it's cooked as Moggins says.
  • The LIDL frozen Pollock is the cheapest I've seen and makes a great fish pie/fish-and-cheese bake/fish risotto etc etc.

    The OP's tone is rather superior.

    The shops do actually sell this expressly FOR human consumption!!
  • Hello All,

    I was wondering whether anyone here actually buys it to eat themselves and if so how do they use it ie do they use it as fishcakes, fishfingers, fish pie etc?

    I don't mean to offend anyone by implying that is is only good enough for cats. it's just that my mum (who to be honest doesn't really like fish that much) is the least OS person you can imagine and would not entertain eating value food.

    {Although I have converted her into buying value beans and chopped tomatoes after a long struggle.I think it may have helped when my dad said that all beans taste the same to him and he really didn't care if he got value beans.}

    Any advice greatly welcomed

    I don't think so budmeiser, The OP is asking what other OS use this for and if it tastes ok..........Didn't read anything superior in it myself.

    and yes I have used it myself, for fish pies, and found it perfectly acceptable.

    I didn't think it was superior either. There's no such thing as a stupid question and if you're new to trying to cut costs how are you supposed to know what's good or not? There are definitely some value things that I wouldn't buy although the beans are a firm favourite in this house.

    I've found that anything that is a basic ingredient is normally fine to use, some of the things that are readymade products I wouldn't feed to the cat!

  • I've bought two bags of value fish fillets (I still wish I knew what fish it was ) today. I'm planning a fish tikka masala (!) this week. I'll let you know how it turns out ;)

    Well I sometimes have Sainsburys Basics fish fingers, which cost 17p for 10! Grill three or four for a butty, dollop of tomato or tartare sauce = brunch for under 20p! :D
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D
