Your last comment is a bit unclear. Were you just pulling away from stationary? My dad had a cam belt snap on him after just pulling away from the lights. due in part low engine speed in the end it cost a shade over £500 needed head rebuilding it was a Renault 1.8 16v engine.

But you need to get the head off the engine too tell how much damage has been done. It may cheaper to get a second hand engine from a breakers as previous poster said.

Do not try to start the engine you'll do more damage.

The AA guy got me to try to start it 3 times.. :(

I can't remember to be honest, the car behind me was blaring his horn at me, not a lot I could do but pull over as soon as possible.

I was pulling away from slowing down to 25mph, forgot to change gear and then it just went.. so I was prob doing 25-30mph... maximum, I may have had my clutch in trying to change gear, I just can't remember.

With the cambelt snapping, starting the engine now will cause little more damage than has already been done.

I know previous posters have said buy an engine from a scrap yard, but you also need to be sure there is nothing wrong with the "new" engine.

Which ever way you want to go, another engine (which will then need fitting) or fixing this engine, its going to be expensive. Personally, I would probably fix this engine - it will be virtually rebuilt when done so be like new.

I;m assuming (with the job loss) that a new/second hand car is not really an option?

Fixing this one isn't an option as I just don't have the money :(

New car not an option either I'm afraid :(

Not many options for me huh lol..

It's a really nice looking 206, wonder if anyone will want it for parts/repair..?

I could do with a garage looking at it, not sure how much they will charge me, got to get it towed there too.

    what about this?

buy the enigne for the £300 delivered to the garage of your choice and then get the car there and get the engine swapped over?

get quotes from local garages to tow your car to them and swap engine over (changing cambelt and associated parts before fitting engine).

it looks as if this will be your cheapest option. then take you old engine to the scrap metal dealer and weigh it in for a few quid in return.

    Thanks for the link :)

I'm going to ring around tomorrow and see what is suggested re: fitting a new engine, or charges for getting it looked at..

I can prob borrow money from family to get it repaired and then probably sell it straight away really. I just can't afford to fix it if it goes wrong again!

Thank you for all the suggestions everyone, it's been a !!!!!! weekend, but I've got my health ;)

 I'm actually crying.. what a !!!!!! year it's been.. I got made redundant 6 weeks ago, so no chance of fixing it, not that it would be worth it anyway.

Had a job interview on weds too, can't get there by public transport..

REALLY feeling sorry for myself now.

Thanks for the help everyone.. What do I do with the car now?

What with your knack for thrift, I'd have thought you'd prefer to walk/cycle/hitch?;)
