already answered that, assuming the disc is ok, boot from it, and make absolutely sure you have all your data safe, XP serial no, and discs for reinstalling programs before going down that route
If the disc is ok, and drive is working, you should be able to see some files on it in explorer.!!

Will try that, thanks for all your help, goodnight0

What is the model number of your PC? Get me all of the models number that you can find. You will need to obtain another RAM module for you PC. 256MB is just not enough. Don't worry, it won't be expensive.0

Ok couple of things, I changed the startup to boot from cd, and it still just boots up normally almost ignoring the cd drive, and the model is
on the sticker it says
Ei SYSTEM model 5028

Ei SYSTEM model 5028
Please edit your post in order to delete the s/n number from your post.
Was there no option to 'Press any key to Boot from CD'? Does any disc work in the drive?0 -
Yeah its strange, everything else seems to work fine in the cd drive except for this disk0

Are you sure that you are following the instructions correctly?
If you want I can supply you with a Windows Home Edition disc and you can run a Clean install. But you will need the serial key supplied on the Certificate of Authenticity.
If you don't have one of these, you will need to retrieve the key from your machine before attempting a clean install. You will also need to download and save these drivers to a CD before continuing.0 -
Is it scratched or dirty?
You can't see any files on it in explorer?!!

Donnie, thanks for all this, all I can say is when I put the disc into my laptop, it recognises that 1 there is a disk and 2 it asks me to do stuff which obviously I wont do because its meant for the PC.
When I put it in the PC, nothing happens at all. not even the noise of a disk spinning, its very odd because CD's and DVD's work fine on it
Would you think that because the disk/pc is so old it might not know what xp service pack 2 is for example?
With regards to the serial key, there is an xp sticker on it with the serial number so I think thats ok!!0 -
Forgive me, how do I find files on explorer?0
