How come if you buy things on hire purchase etc, you have to show proof of earnings, so the company knows you have the means to pay, surely mobile phone companies should have to do this also!
We have taught Daughter financial responsibility, but she's like alot of teenagers these days "lives in cloud cuckoo land"
Mcneff............There's no cooling of period because she bought it directly from the shop, if she bought it online she'd have 14 days cooling off...........And yes your right, me and hubby are not paying it, so she'll have to get a job, serve her self right for being so bloody stupid!
It's the easier way to learn
And yep not everything asks for proof of earnings. I have a credit card where they asked how much I earn, but didn't ask for proof.
I said I have an income of £5k.... and got a £1.1k credit card 0% for 12 months0 -

Because a mobile phone contract is not hire purchase!!!I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair0 -

She wouldnt have been able to get one if she said she only had an income of £30 a week.
What are they meant to do? follow her around for a week to ensure she has a job?
Most students credit checks would come back clean so a contract would be given.
Atleast she now has a shiny new phone that will be blocked shortly, maybe having her credit rating trashed for the next 6 years will teach her the morals you have obviously not taught her
Daughter didn't lie to get the contract....They knew she was a student with no job......Therefore I don't think they should have give her the contract!
And we have taught her morals, my huband and I have always taught her, to save up if she wants something and if she carnt afford it, do what we do, and do without.
We have never been in debt or ever borrowed anything thats why I'm p***ed off for her getting a contract so easy!0 -

and how many students do you think get contracts every year?
its up to her to pay the contract
how did she plan to fund it in the holiday?0 -
Your daughter clearly isnt very savvy when it comes to money. Phone contracts are generally cheaper if you buy them online and they come with increased assurance - like a guaranteed cooling off period. Secondly, credit checks ARE directly related to your addresses (amongst other things).
My best friend at Uni was refused a credit card 2 years after she had graduated because one of her previous Uni addresses was the same as a guy who had defaulted on a mortgage after he graduated. They had lived in the same address therefore it reflected badly on her. She wasted alot of breath trying to fight that.
It's not the actions of the phone company that are disgraceful, its the careless and general idiocy of your darling daughter.
On a slightly more helpful note - tell her to phone the company and cancel her insurance. She doesn't need it.0 -
Gill are you actually living in Durham now??
If yes, I'll send you a link to someone who may try and help you.
I'm fully behind you Gill, you do appear to be responsible to me as you are trying to sort the mess your daughter got into. P4u and the network must also share some of the mess this could create and I would follow Browntoa's advice and contact the network first.
It's crazy that your daughter tried to get something she can't afford, but also crazy for this to be given to her. She certainly won't be the last teenager to try this.
