If its like a normal insurance company-

    Market Value
They will come up with a liability figure and wont go above this
They'd use the market value to replace it with, although with the increasing pace of computers it makes it practically impossible.
Thanks - I've looked into it more - as my laptop initially cost me £579, I'll need to isnure it for £600 with them, costing £36 per annum.

What does market value mean, the value at time of loss/theft/damage? If so why am I being asked to cover the full value if they won't ever pay out £600? :o

Hello there. My Girlfriend lives in a student house-share, and they do not have contents insurance. She's never had anything of value so it hasn't mattered, but now she has bought a new laptop, and would like it insured. Her bank don't offer gadget insurance, and can only offer contents insurance on the whole house, not just her room. How can I get the laptop insured by itself, and how much would it roughly be?

    Many thanks in advance

If she is a studnet than the NUS offer individual room insurance for shared accomodation (at least they used to about 15 years ago).

It may be possible to get it added to her parents house insurance

failing that googling "laptop insurance" gets a selection of results that may be suitable

I recall that Endsleigh Insurance had a massive student insurance scheme. Perhaps give them a buzz? Or try this link https://niche.endsleigh.co.uk/
    Reassuringly expensive

Be aware that alot of policy booklets are being rewritten to specifically exclude student possessions when away from the home.

Hey people thank you so much for your help. Endsleigh have quoted £77/annum, which covers just the laptop, and includes loss, theft, accidental damage, and upto 30 days cover if she goes abroad. Not bad for a £799 laptop that she'll have for a good few years. Thanks a lot to everybody that commented!

30 days cover abroad - do you have to phone them up and tell them you're going abroad or something? Otherwise how do they know you've not been away for more than 30 days? I'm off on holiday this summer and have same endsleigh cover... just wanna make sure I'm actually covered, I know these insurance companies like to squeeze out of claims lol!
Blackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan.
Baldrick: Is it as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning?
    Blackadder: Yes it is.
    Baldrick: Hmm... that's cunning.
  • Hi.

I am going to purchase a
Acer Aspire 5920G Laptop from Currys. It costs £500 and they offer a "whatever happens" insurance policy. I believe it costs £7.99 a month and is indefinite. here is the blurb:

Just call one number. We'll come to you. We'll fix or replace it. No limits. No hidden costs.
If we can't fix the problem over the telephone we'll get someone to you within 2 working days who can usually fix the problem on the spot. For many small portable items, simply drop into your nearest store.
    • We'll fix or replace it. If we can't fix your product there and then, we will fix the problem within 21 days or give you a replacement.
    • No limits. No matter how many times it goes wrong, we'll be there to put it right.
    • No hidden costs. You won't pay a penny extra - labour, parts and general advice are included
What it doesn't cover is things like theft, loss, misuse etc... Do you guys think it is worth taking out?
